K. MATTHIAE in BERLIN. Steuerung für Luftdruckbremsen. K. MATTHIAE in BERLIN. Control for air brakes.
The valve is connected with its channel a to the working space of the brake cylinder, with channel b to the dead space. The channel cd and the open valve i establish a connection with the air line. The difference in cross-section of channels c and d determines the duration of the first exhaust pipe in the pipeline. Chamber X is with the dead space of the brake cylinder, chambers y and C. connected to the pipeline.
With valve O, in the rest position, the line pressure is on one side of the diaphragm and the pressure from both cylinder chambers on the other. After pressure equalization between the air line and the brake cylinder has taken place, valve i rests on its seat. Piston h always tries to keep valve i closed.
If the pressure in the air line is greater than that in the cylinder chambers, the membrane is compressed. Piston h comes to its seat and then the valve i connected to it is opened; the compressed air can then flow over from the air line into both cylinder chambers. The bulge in the bottom of the membrane is pressed through during manufacture, that is, after the connection of the air duct, in order to obtain the necessary rigidity in this direction.
Nimmt nun bei der Verschiebung des Bremskolbens der Druck im Arbeitsraum ab, und ist die Druckminderung in der Luftleitung eine entsprechend geringe gewesen, so findet bei der Membrane eine schnelle Zusammenziehung statt und bleibt nur der durchgebeulte Boden vermöge seiner gröfseren Steifigkeit stehen, so dafs der Kolben h zwangläufig, in solcher Lage gehalten wird, dafsIf the cylinder chambers are filled and braking is to take place through air outlets, after the first outlet has been effected, only the air escapes from chamber C, the compressed air of the cylinder filling lifts piston f and, through valve g, lets the line pressure through the channel e escape, but only until the pressure above the membrane through the narrow channel d also a sufficient pressure reduction has undergone and the diaphragm, is expansive, lifts the plunger h and the air outlet from the dead space of the Bremscylinders bb through the channels x after the open air. Since the channels b ^ 1 have a larger cross-section than the channel e, if the pressure in the dead space is reduced more rapidly, the line pressure will soon have the predominance of the piston / and the valve g will close automatically. The regulation of the air outlet from the dead cylinder chamber is done with the help of the unequal rigidity of the metal membrane and its bulged bottom. During braking, the diaphragm is greatly expanded by the greater pressure of the working chamber of the brake cylinder and the bulged bottom is also pushed upwards, which movements are followed by the piston h . If the pressure in the working space decreases when the brake piston is displaced, and if the pressure reduction in the air line has been correspondingly small, the membrane contracts rapidly and only the bulged bottom remains due to its greater rigidity, so that the piston h is inevitably held in such a position that
