Description
Detinning of Aluminum The subject of the present invention is a Process for detinning aluminum. It is based on the known fact that the aluminum with a number of metals, e.g. B. lead, cadmium, bismuth, sodium, Potassium and thallium cannot be mixed or only mixed to a very limited extent in the liquid state, while the tin is completely miscible with these metals in the liquid state Alloys forms.
It has now been found that if you use tin-containing aluminum with such Treated metals and then settle or solidify in a liquid state the tin is distributed in the two phases, namely in the different Metals in different proportions. Experiments showed that when treating the Tin-containing aluminum, for example, m:, t lead is the distribution coefficient of the Tin between the two phases is about i, so that when using equal amounts by weight of both metals about half of the tin remains in the aluminum, the other in the lead goes. So in general it will not be possible with an operation to extract the total amount of tin from the aluminum. By repeating it several times During the process, however, detinning of the aluminum can be carried out as far as desired can be achieved.
The tin, which is in the non-aluminum phase, can be made from it can be obtained by known methods. Also z. B. the resulting Tin-lead alloy is used as such.
A significant improvement of the method according to the invention can as was further found, can still be achieved by considering the leachate metal (e.g. lead) is not used in its pure state, but has a substance added to it, with which the tin is able to form a connection. Such substances are z. B. the allzali metals, for example sodium. Such an addition occurs namely a not inconsiderable increase in the distribution coefficient in many cases a. When using vain io 4'o sodium-containing lead-sodium alloy increased he z. B. to about 3, so that with this - alloy in a few repetitions of the process the tin can be removed from the aluminum to a very large extent.
In order not to have to use fresh amounts of leach metal inuizer, can in a further embodiment of the invention, the purification of A.lurniniums with the of the leaching metal combined and at the same time in the same container with it be made at the same time.
For this purpose, an arrangement of the system is used according to the invention, as shown by the drawing, for example.
In the figure i represents an electrolyzing tank. 2 is that melted Leaching metal, in the present case lead, with with the aid of a tube 3 open at the bottom, the tin-containing aluminum layer 4. communicates. Outside the tube 3 is a lead-chloride melt on the lead layer 2 5 layered. In the lead layer 2, an electrode 6 is immersed as a cathode Lead chloride layer has an electrode as an anode. 8 is a pipe for discharge volatile products.
The procedure for this arrangement is as follows: The tin of the tin-liquid aluminum is distributed according to the distribution coefficient . between the aluminum and the lead on the one hand and between the lead and the lead chloride (Sn + Pb C12 Pb -j-- Sn CL) on the other hand, until equilibrium has occurred. By Electrolysis and removal of the Sn as SnCli, which through the tube 8 from the lead chloride phase distilled off, this equilibrium is constantly disturbed, so that new amounts of tin from the aluminum phase to the lead phase and from this to the salt phase, from which they distill off as Sn Cl, until both metal layers of tin are practical are free.
The process can be carried out either continuously or continuously done discontinuously.
