Process for the sulphonation of inorganic and organic substances Pyridine and its derivatives, the picolines, quinolines, etc. combine with sulfuric anhydride or substances containing or splitting off sulfuric anhydride to form anhydro-N-pyridinium sulphonic acids. These N-pyridinium sulfonic acids of the simplest formula easily transfer their group S03 to compounds that are capable of forming sulfonic acids. It arises here. the pyridinium salts of the corresponding sulfonic acids. If the sulfonation involves basic or amine compounds or salts, the pyrdine bases are immediately set free. Otherwise, they can also use their. sulfonic acid salts easily deposited again and used again for sulfonation after their conversion with sulfuric anhydride, etc.
The sulfonation often takes place in the cold. Because the reaction
then proceeds with the development of heat, it must be alleviated by cooling.
In those cases where the sulfonation cannot be achieved at ordinary temperatures
it can be forced by heating. With the sulfonations that already
in the # cold, it is advisable to use the reacting substances in a for
to resolve or suspend the case of indifferent means. As such, water can
be used, since this is only at an elevated temperature with the N-pyridinium sulfonic acid
to, sulfuric acid and pyridir converts.
