Manufacture of phosphoric acid and hydrogen In the patent
438 178 describes a process for the production of phosphoric acid and hydrogen,
after which, through the action of limited amounts of water vapor, with or without addition
from air or oxygen to phosphorus at high temperatures in addition to hydrogen initially
a mixture of phosphoric acid with acids of lower oxidation states of phosphorus
or their anhydrides and then this at lower temperatures
Oxygen or oxygen-containing gases or oxygen-releasing substances are oxidized.
Man
Chamotte, Carborundum und Kohle angewandt werden. It has now been found that this can be done in the production of phosphoric acid
and hydrogen by the action of water or water vapor from phosphorus at high

can also contain oxygen-free gases or liquids other than water, e.g. B.

Appropriately, the hydrogen obtained from phosphorus and water vapor in the purification of the hydrogen, z. B. using the washing water obtained according to the method of patent 462,781: Since this mainly contains phosphorous acid, the conversion of the phosphorous acid contained in the washing water to phosphoric acid is achieved at the same time. Example A gas mixture consisting of zoo kg of phosphorus vapor and 78o kg of water vapor enters the contact furnace at A at a temperature of 300 to 320 ' , as shown in the figure, and flows over catalyst I, which is made of a copper-nickel alloy consists. The heat of reaction occurring during the oxidation of the phosphorus increases the temperature to between 65o and 700 °. The products are then cooled to 600 ° by injecting water at B, whereupon, after passing over catalyst II, which consists of chamotte, the phosphoric acid with a content of only 0.5 to r% by weight of phosphorous acid is removed from the apparatus leaves. Before cooling, the reaction products still contained about zo per cent of the converted phosphorus as phosphorous acid.
