Process for purifying gases from sulfur compounds It is
known that one can purify gases of hydrogen sulfide by doing them
with the amount of air necessary to oxidize the sulfur compounds to sulfur oxides
or oxygen via heated lawn iron ore and either that to the formation
of the corresponding amm-oatiumsalze required amount of ammomiac, if this is not of
is present in the gas beforehand, added before or after the catalytic treatment
and separates the salt formed or the sulfur-oxygen compounds formed
washes out with ammaniac water. It is also proposed to be used as catalysts
this process to use masses which are made of a sulfur-binding metal, such as
z. B. iron, nickel or copper, and an oxygen-carrying metal, e.g. B.
Vanadium, chromium or tungsten, their oxides or salts, possibly with or without a carrier,
exist. Furthermore, when passing over hydrogen sulfide-containing
Gases together with the corresponding amount of air above below the gas ignition temperature
In addition to elemental sulfur, heated coal also contains sulfur oxides.
It has now been found that in the purification of gases from sulfur compounds it is advantageous to use alloys or compounds of earth or heavy metal with metalloids of the [...], 5th and 6th groups of the periodic table, with the exception of oxygen, as catalysts can. Of metals, mainly those of the iron group, as well as copper, aluminum, etc. are suitable for this purpose. B. the carbides, silicides, nitrides, phosphides, sulfides, also alloys of the above metals with titanium, zirconium and antimony useful catalysts. It is advantageous to work at temperatures around qoo °. Example i Water gas with a sulfur content of 2.7 g of sulfur per cubic meter is then admixed with 2 percent by volume of air over a grained catalyst made of an alloy of 67% iron, 2% phosphorus and ii % Silicon, with practically the entire amount of the sulfur contained in the gas being oxidized to sulfur-oxygen compounds. The gases withdrawn at a temperature of about 35o ° become 0.4 percent by volume of ammonia; admixed, whereby the formation of the Am. Monium salts is effected, which are then deposited, for example, in an electrical high-voltage field. Example 2 Illuminating gas with 8 g of H2S per cubic meter is mixed with 100 ° of air and this mixture is added. about 3 io ° passed over a catalyst which is prepared as follows: A mixture consisting of 70% nickel powder and 30% copper powder is mixed with well-baked charcoal, which contains about 20%, o, d (it contains more volatile constituents, all mixed with poorly baking coal and tar and coked the whole thing at about 800 to 100o °. The product obtained, containing the carbides of nickel and copper, is broken into pieces. The catalyst is particularly effective between 300 and 38o °. That in the luminous gas The hydrogen sulfide contained is converted quantitatively into S02 or S03, and at the same time the oxygen supplied is completely used up.
Instead of the mentioned catalyst, one can also use one which was obtained by soaking coal coke with a concentrated solution of nickel nitrate and heating. A complete conversion of the hydrogen sulfide takes place here at temperatures between 320 and 39o0.
