Zur Herstellung eines Hutes gemäß der Erfindung wird ein schlauchförmiges,
mit einer knieförmigen Biegung versehenes baumwollenes Gewebe -oder Gewirke ,entsprechend
der Abb. a benutzt. Das dargestellte Arbeitsstück ist ein schweres Gewirke, doch
kann auch gewebter Stoff verwendet werden. Dieses Arbeitsstück wird entlang den
punktierten Linien in Abb. 2 aufgeschnitten, so daß es im ausgebreiteten Zustand
die in Abb.3 veranschaulichte Form erhält: Wie diese Abbildung erkennen läßt, hat
das Arbeitsstück schon eine einem Hut ähnliche Gestalt insofern, als der ausgebauchte
Teil i dem späteren Hutkopf entspricht, während die flachliegenden Randteile 3 später
die Hutkrempe ergeben. Das so erhaltene Arbeitsstück wird durch eine Behandlung
mit 7o- bis 8oprozentiger Schwefelsäure an Gewicht oder durch irgend andere geeignete
Schrumpf- und Versteifungsmittel bildsam bzw. steif formbar gemacht und in diesem
Zustand auf die in Abb. ¢ veranschaulichte Form gebracht, derart, daß der Teil i
des Arbeitsstückes über den erhöhten Teil 7 der Form gezogen wird und die Randteile
3 gegen die Grundplatte 5 liegen. Gegebenenfalls kann ein Formoberteil 6 auf den
unteren Teil der Form aufgebracht werden, doch ist letzteres nicht uhbedingt erforderlich,
da der Hut durch einfaches Trocknen auf der Form die gewünschte Gestalt erhält und
nach dem Trocknen auch genügend steif ist. Die Zeitdauer der chemischen Naßbehandlung
hängt von den Verwendung findenden Chemikalien und der Beschaffenheit und Dichte
des Arbeitsstückes ab. Bei Behandlung mit Schwefelsäure der oben angegebenen Stärke
sind bereits nach einer Behandlungsdauer von einer Minute gute Ergebnisse erzielt
worden. Die Krempe 3 des Hutes kann, wie Abb.6 erkennen läßt, am Rande umgelegt
und durch Stiche 8 angenäht werden. Letzteres ist jedoch, wenn Schwefelsäure benutzt
wird, nicht unbedingt erforderlich, da nach der oben angegebenen Behandlung der
