Description
Dust disks for axle bearings, in particular of railroad cars The invention relates to dust disks for the axle bearings, in particular of railroad cars. These dust disks tend to be housed in a chamber at the rear end of the bearing box and are used to keep dust and water away from the axle box. Such dust disks have already been made from a wide variety of materials. Wooden discs have been used extensively. They are often provided with metal springs to keep them flexible in their position. Sometimes they have been covered with scraps of plush for this purpose. It is also known "to reinforce them by brackets or corrugated metal strips at those places where they can break at leichtesten. A dust disk of wood is not permanent, and it is probably the only reason used mainly because it is cheap, and not because their protective effect is particularly high.
It is also known to use felt dust discs. they are but expensive and are often broken upon removal from bearings. It is suggested dust discs made of felt through reinforcements made of canvas or lattice canvas to reinforce. They have also been connected with metallic spring devices, to hold the disc in its position in the dust chamber of the axle bearing. These Assemblies of different parts have made the disc expensive. Dust discs have also been made from soft fiberboard; but such Disks have the same drawbacks as felt disks. Finally one has also proposed to manufacture the S # taubsche: be from a vegetable fiber, -der is soaked or mixed with a solution consisting of gutta-percha, oil or fat, with or without the use of glue. In this case, however, the fats take it away Fiber the stiffness and easily dissolve in the lubricant.
The invention relates to a dust disc that is known in the manner consists of a number of layers made up of fibrous, paper-like. material are composed of difficult to bend, weakly absor- ming and weakly compressible Nature as well as low lifting effect for the oil.
The invention consists in making these layers so to one another a unitary body to be connected that the connection points between Contribute to the layers to deliver the oil to the axis by capillary action.
The drawing illustrates an embodiment of the subject matter of the invention. Fig.i is a. Elevation, Fig.4 an edge view and Fig. 3 a section along the line 3-3 of Fig. I.
The dust disk i has the usual outline shape and is provided with the usual axle hole. The gruxide body of the disc consists of hard fiberboard in five layers q .. These are all of the same size and thickness and held together by double-pronged rivets 5. The hard fiberboard used is a fibrous, paper-like material that is difficult to bend, but is only slightly absurd and compressible. It is durable because it is stiff and resistant to wear and tear. It retains its strength even under tough conditions. Operating conditions even if it is saturated with oil. The inner spaces are such, that, they then. Add enough oil to the hole. to prevent seizing on the axle. The rigidity is sufficient to make the pane self-supporting. to be attached in a suitable position on the axle, so that it acts as a dust disc. Although vulcanized fiber can be used if one slice of the largest. Flexibility and durability, and with a minimum of absorbency, is required for the 01 , it is preferable to use a fabric known in the trade as hard fiberboard for its manufacture because of its cheapness, poor absorbency and sufficient durability for oil the intended purpose. This hard fiber paperboard has the further advantage of being polished and smoothed on the surface where it comes into contact with the axle, a fact that increases its service life.
The disk is made of a plurality of layers of hard fiberboard made so that the oil can easily penetrate between the individual layers of material and in the interstices of the layers through the action of capillarity up to the surface the axle can be lifted so that it provides the necessary lubrication.
