In patent 462,795 there is a spherical or ellipsoidal filament made of tungsten wire
described for electric incandescent lamps, which consists of two spherical or ellipsoidal
wound spiral-shaped domes, with the free ends of their largest
Spiral windings are electrically connected to one another so that a closed
spherical or ellipsoidal luminous body is created. In addition to ordinary tungsten multi-crystal wire, the spherical
or ellipsoidal filament also made from single or long crystal tungsten wire
if you pay attention to the fact that its crystal structure is known per se
is disturbed by sufficient bending stress in many places, so that the
or long crystal wire maintains its shape without distortion even when using
burned at high temperatures.
The free ends of the largest turns of the two domes were connected to each other at point c in the manufacture of this luminous element, as can be seen from Fig. 1, which corresponds to Fig. 1 of the main patent, so that the spirals of the entire sphere form a continuous helix . As stated in the main patent, the electrical connection of the two domes α and b at point c can be made, for example, by welding or twisting. It has now been shown that when these connections are made, the ends at point c very easily get an internal twist, which very easily results in a short circuit between the largest spiral turns of the spherical or ellipsoidal luminous element. Such short circuits, which are not due to a distortion of the largest spiral turns but to a distortion at the connection point c , of course make the luminous element immediately unusable.
elektrisch leitend miteinander verbunden.
In order to reduce these distortions at junction c and their effect on the largest spirals, which are inherently distortion-free, it has proven to be practical to wind the two domes a ' and V (Fig. 2) so that the largest spiral turns are in the same direction run as shown in this figure. The largest spiral turns running in the same direction are in turn connected to one another in an electrically conductive manner at point a ", b". If twisting forces are still present at the junction that can work towards a short circuit of the largest spiral turns, this is impossible with this arrangement, because the forces are never so great that they bring the widely spaced turns e and f into mutual contact can. If the twisting forces are directed in the opposite direction to this, they can, in the worst case, only cause the two spiral wires α "and b", which touch each other from a certain point onwards, to come into contact with one another over a greater distance than originally. Such short circuits, which can only cause small parts of the filament to fail with very small voltage differences between the short-circuit points, are, however, much safer than short circuits in which at least one entire spiral turn is put out of operation if they should occur.
