Description
Method of making metals, especially the contacts and rotating Disks on mercury bath electricity meters, against the attack of mercury The subject of the invention is a method to protect metals against Protect from exposure to mercury. The invention particularly relates to on the protection of the rotating and contact parts of such electricity meters that work with a mercury bath.
The electricity meters with a mercury bath have a rotating disc, which conducts the current to be measured and serves as a brake. This disc dips in Mercury one. In practice it is important that as the material for this disc Copper is used to have the highest possible conductivity in order to be used for to circulate eddy currents in the copper for the purpose of braking. The surface this disk is not protected against the attack of mercury. Rather, it is expediently amalgamated to ensure safe contact of the mercury with the copper to ensure. On the other hand, this arrangement has the disadvantage that the amalgamation During the entire life of the apparatus, it progresses and has a compaction the copper disk, whose conductivity is due to the penetration of the mercury in the surface is deteriorated. Attempts have been made before to address these evils by plating the copper washer with platinum, so as to prevent the mercury from attacking the body of the disc. the The edge of the disk was left free of platinum and was amalgamated, like this that the current to be measured could pass at this point. The platinum plating, meanwhile proved too porous, and as the mercury penetrated the plating and also got under the platinum from the amalgamated point, became the platinum plating lifted off the copper, so that the disc again contaminated and the counter was disturbed. One also has to deal with this porosity of the plating with its consequences to avoid and to make the planing more durable, the plating or varnished enamelled. However, this has not proven effective either. It was already proposed that the copper disc with a hot-wound I`Tickelring and to avoid direct contact between the copper and the mercury to cover the copper disk with an insulating layer, which is still partly over the ? Nickel rim engages. According to another Procedures should be the too protective parts are electrolytically coated with nickel, with the at the same time copper is deposited, but the latter only in the amount that the Clothing is still resistant to amalgamation. The task is through However, this method is not solved because the porosity of the electrolytic Precipitate this no protection against the penetration of the mercury up to Base metal offer.
The invention now relates to an effective protection of the metals especially of copper, against the attack of mercury. Platinum is in itself highly suitable as a protective layer for the electricity meter disks and To give contacts to the mercury, because there is only low electrical contact resistance compared to mercury, and although it is e.g. B. is possible to electrolytically mercury to be reflected on platinum, the platinum is highly resilient against the attack of mercury outside the electrolytic process, d. H. that is, within the conditions that exist with electricity meters.
According to the invention, the procedure is that the platinum on the surface of the parts to be protected is applied in such a way that it is formed a platinum-copper alloy penetrates the copper. For this introduction of the Platinum in the copper body it is first necessary that the process in a Atmosphere happens that neither attacks the platinum nor the copper. The heating too must not be so sudden that the plating lifts off the disc. Rather, it must be heated slowly until the high temperature is going on Alloying process begins. On the other hand, the temperature and the heating time must be be regulated so that not all of the platinum is absorbed by the copper, but that on the surface a blanket of platinum for contact with the mercury remain.
The invention is for example for the contacts and the disc of the electricity meter designed so that first the parts to be protected be completely plated with platinum by electroplating, whereupon then slowly the clad bodies are heated to red heat in an atmosphere which has no effect on either the platinum or the copper. Under these circumstances there is an alloy between platinum and copper at their contact surfaces, and it is no longer possible to remove the platinum coating. If this annealing process is continued for too long, all of the platinum forms an alloy with the copper, and there is no platinum ceiling left behind. Therefore it is important that the temperature is only maintained until the union of the metals in the desired one Depth is reached.
When using such plated bodies in the electricity meters it has been found that platinum in combination with mercury is very good There is contact, so the point of contact between platinum and mercury is a very good one Has conductivity, which of course is of great importance for electricity meters with O_uecksilberbad is. The good conductivity of the disk itself is also maintained insofar as the protective layer of platinum and platinum-copper alloy is only thin and as a result does not noticeably reduce the conductivity of the pane. It is important that the protective layer on the copper disk is non-magnetic, because otherwise the meter would be disturbed. The procedure should be based on an example to be discribed.
For example, a copper washer with a diameter of 55 mm and 31 "mm thick electrolytically coated with platinum and then in a carbonic acid atmosphere heated to 700 ° C. The disk was heated slowly to prevent the plating from flaking off to prevent from copper, which is due to the hydrogen enclosed in the copper can easily be done. This slow heating took about 6 minutes. the The disk was then held at 70.degree. C. for 8 minutes and then in the carbonic acid atmosphere cooled down. Microscopic examination showed that at the point of contact between Copper and platinum an alloy of noticeable depth had entered, and the test in boiling mercury nitrate solution gave a high resistance to the mercury attack. There might be a tendency for the platinum plating to peel off can no longer be determined. It may be useful to do this after the Process treated metal with a hardening and densifying surface treatment by pressing or layers after the annealing process. Instead of carbonic acid other gases can also be used. So z. B. in electrolytic, not Afterwards molten copper a hydrogen gas can be used, since this too chemically acts neither on the platinum nor on the copper. Likewise, the procedure be carried out in a vacuum.
It is also possible to add a third metal between the base metal and plating provided that the three metals in the order in which they are applied, are able to deal with the adjoining To alloy metal, and that a perfect adhesion is achieved. It is Of course, it is not essential that, as in the example, the cover metal is electrolytic Paths applied, as well, other methods can be used to add the plating metal to apply to the metal to be protected. It is always essential to use the The amount and the time after a limited heating by which an alloy at the Contact point of the two metals is brought about.
