Description
Separation and refining of metal mixtures. It is known that between liquid metal alloys and their molten halogen compounds Oil metals are able to establish equilibria with great reaction speed such that for a certain composition of the metal phase a certain composition belongs to the salt phase. A whole series of such equilibria, especially between two metals and their chlorides, has recently been investigated and published been. It is also known that one can disturb an equilibrium by removed a constituent of the equilibrium, causing the reaction in the direction is forced to continue running, in which the removed material is reproduced.
It has now been recognized that one can separate these two facts and refining of mixed metals if one or more metals capable of forming two halogen compounds, one of which is volatile.
The separation of the lead from the tin z. B. would follow this procedure do as follows: One melts the lead-tin alloy under one with its in equilibrium blanket of its molten chlorides and conducts Chlorine in the chloride melt. The tin tetrachloride formed is distilled off, the equilibrium is disturbed as a result, new tin goes from the metal into the molten salt, and the process continues until the metal bath is practically free of tin is made of pure lead, and the molten salt is made of practically pure lead chloride consists. All of the tin has evaporated as tin tetrachlotide. In the presence of halogen compounds in the melt, one can see the evolution of halogen in the bath do it yourself, especially by electrolytic means. The molten metal will connected as a cathode and in the melt of the metal compounds, including salts including sulfides and oxides are to be understood, a suitable anode, e.g. B. a carbon rod, immersed. It is then equivalent to the halogen produced in this way Amount of metal not to be removed, e.g. B. the lead in the example above, from the melt of the metal compounds (salts) into the metal bath, while the to be removed metal compound by reaction with the halogen formed as higher halogenation level is removed from the bath by volatilization. Furthermore the process then proceeds in a manner similar to that given above by There is now a new equilibrium between the metal bath and the molten salt sets, characterized in that the metal to be removed from the metal bath passes as a compound into the molten salt by reacting with it. What from here Halides is said to apply in the same way to oxydk n and sulphides, whereby likewise the higher levels. if they are volatile, in this way from the molten ones Salt baths can be removed.
The equilibrium in the example above is characterized by that for a specific composition of the salt phase a very specific composition belongs to the metal phase. So is z. B. determined experimentally been that to a metal phase of the composition 5o atomic percent lead and 5o atomic percent Tin a salt phase with the composition 8o mol percent lead chloride and 2o mol percent - tin chloride heard. The equilibria do not follow the ordinary law of mass action, but a complicated law found by R. Lorenz for condensed systems. They are quite independent of the temperature, because of the exothermicity of the reaction is a minor one. They are also independent of the pressure, since it is a condensed one System acts.
Dabei spielen sich dann die oben beschriebenen Vorgänge ab.The detinning of a lead-Z'nn-Le''ation is carried out as follows, for example: The alloy in question is melted down with lead chloride, an equilibrium system being established relatively quickly in accordance with the following equation Then the metal regulator is made the cathode, a carbon electrode is dipped into the molten salt as an anode and electrolyzed with a current density of about 1 to 2 amperes per square centimeter of anode area. The processes described above then take place.
The separation is of course not due to two metals or molten metals limited in equilibrium with chloride melts, one can biphasic with all Systems of metals and molten metal compounds work if only one Some of the metals with halogen supply volatile halogen compounds.
