Handelsübliche Werkstoffe dieser Art sind zunächst breiig oder flüssig und erhärten an der Außenluft zu einer festen Masse, so daß die Beschichtung beispielsweise in einer vorbestimmten Dicke mit einem sich daraus zwangsläufig ergebenden zusätzlichen Gewicht aufgespritzt oder in anderer Weise aufgetragen werden kann und dann erhärtet. Häufige Verwendung findet ein solcher Werkstoff auf der Basis eines Epoxidharzes mit darin fein verteilt eingebetteten Brandschutzsubstanzen in den Innenräumen von Stahlschiffen und von Bohrinseln. Der Werkstoff bewirkt einen guten Korrosionsschutz und gehört zu den dynamischen Brandschutzprodukten, die erst bei Brand ihre Schutzwirkung entfalten.
