Zählkammer zur Untersuchung von Wellenstrahlung, insbesondere Röntgenstrahlen. Patentiert im Deutschen Reiche vom 27. April 1924 ab. Counting chamber for examining wave radiation, especially X-rays. Patented in the German Empire on April 27, 1924.
Insbesondere wird beiIn the Geiger counting chambers, the ionization effect of individual α and ß particles is determined reinforced by impact ionization in an ionization vessel forming the counting chamber is triggered. In particular,
In this way, the number of people in the chamber can be checked count incoming electrons.
Such counting chambers can now also be used to detect wave radiation, e.g. B. from X-rays. Here the window of the chamber, through which at the known methods, the α- and ß-particles to be detected occur, closed.
The electrons, which are finally to be counted, are triggered inside the chamber by the wave rays to be examined from the atoms present there. The subject of the invention is such a construction of the counting chamber that a strong effect, even by very weak radiation, is produced. The body which, under the action of the radiation to be examined, emits the β-particles or electrons that are counted, is arranged according to the invention in the chamber directly opposite the tip, and the radiation expediently falls on this body at such an angle, that the electrons emerge from it predominantly in the direction of the tip, ie the radiation is allowed to enter approximately perpendicular to the connecting line, the tip and the body to be irradiated. Furthermore, in order to increase the effect, the electron-donating body is made of a substance with a high atomic number such as lead, bismuth, and so on. In the figure, an embodiment of a counting chamber according to the invention is shown in section. In an essentially cylindrical metal vessel z, for example made of aluminum, insulated by an amber plug ρ , a pin s 1 which ends in a fine point is arranged. Opposite this point, the chamber has a protruding boss b made of lead, bismuth or the like. The radiation to be examined is directed perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the chamber, for example through the laterally indicated channel, onto the parts of the hump b closest to the tip. Electrons are then released which are thrown off essentially perpendicular to the direction of the beam, that is to say mainly towards the tip. When a suitably selected voltage is applied between the tip s and the housing ζ, the individual electron causes a peak discharge to set in between these parts. The number of single discharges occurring in a certain time is a measure of the intensity of the radiation.
It is not essential that the electrons donate under the action of the radiation To arrange substance on the top of a special elevation protruding into the chamber. It is only necessary that it is arranged directly opposite the tip. Likewise, the filling of the chamber with different Gases at different pressures are conceivable regardless of the concept of the invention.
