Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to fabric treatment compositions. In particular, it relates to fabric treatment compositions for use in the rinse cycle of a fabric washing process to provide fabric softening/static control benefits, the compositions being characterized by exceptional storage stability and viscosity properties, as well as exceptional biodegradability. The compositions of the invention can also be used to treat fabrics in hot air clothes dryers and in hair conditioning compositions.
Fabric treatment compositions suitable for providing fabric softening and static control benefits during laundry washing are well known in the art and have found widespread commercial application. Conventional rinse-added fabric softening compositions contain as the active softening component essentially water-insoluble, cationic materials containing two long alkyl chains. Typical of such materials are distearyldimethylammonium chloride and imidazolinium compounds substituted with two stearyl groups. These materials are conventionally prepared in the form of a dispersion in water and it is generally not possible to prepare such aqueous dispersions containing more than about 10% cationic materials without incurring inevitable problems of product viscosity and stability, particularly after storage at elevated temperatures, such that the compositions are not pourable and have inadequate dispersing and dissolving properties in rinse water. This physical limitation on softener concentration naturally limits the amount of softening performance that can be achieved without using excessive amounts of product and also adds significantly to the cost of distribution and packaging. Therefore, it would be highly desirable to prepare physically acceptable fabric treatment compositions containing much larger amounts of water-insoluble cationic softening materials.
It would also be desirable to have fabric softening compositions that are storage stable and that are also biodegradable. However, materials that can biodegrade are often difficult to formulate as stable liquid compositions.
It is an object of this invention to provide a storage stable, biodegradable fabric softening composition. It is a further object to provide such materials in the form of liquid products, concentrates and sheet form for use in clothes dryers. These and other objects are achieved by practicing the present invention as will be apparent from the following description.
Cationic softening materials are conventionally supplied by the manufacturer in the form of a slurry containing about 70% to 80% of active material in an organic liquid such as isopropanol, sometimes containing a small amount of water (up to about 10%). Retail fabric softening compositions are then prepared by dispersing the softening slurry in warm water under carefully controlled conditions. However, the limitations on the physical form and dispersibility of these industrial concentrates are such that they preclude their direct use by the consumer in the home; in fact, they can present serious processing problems even to the industrial supplier of the retail fabric softening compositions.
See, for example, U.S. Patent No. 4,339,391, Hoffmann et al., July 13, 1982, for a series of quaternized ester-amines which act as fabric softeners. Various quaternized ester-amines are commercially available under the trade name SYNPROLAM FS from ICI. U.S. Patent Nos. 4,426,299, January 17, 1984, and 4,401,578, August 30, 1983, Verbruggen, relate to paraffin, fatty acids and ester fillers in softener concentrates.
European Patent Specification 0 018 039, Clint et al., March 7, 1984, concerns hydrocarbons and soluble cationic or non-ionic surfactants in plasticizer concentrates to improve viscosity and stability properties.
Patent No. 4,454,049, MacGilp et al., June 12, 1984, describes liquid fabric treatment compositions in the form of isotropic solutions containing water-insoluble di-C16-C24 optionally hydroxy-substituted alkyl, alkaryl or alkenyl cationic fabric softeners, wherein at least about 70% of the fabric softener consists of one or more components which together have a final melting temperature of less than about 20°C, a water-insoluble nonionic filler, particularly C10-C40 hydrocarbons or esters of mono- or polyhydric alcohols with C8-C24 fatty acids, and a water-miscible organic solvent. The concentrates exhibit improved formulation stability and dispersibility combined with exceptional fabric softening properties.
In der US-PS 4 439 330, Ooms, 27. März 1984, sind konzentrierte Gewebeweichmacher, welche ethoxylierte Amine umfassen, enthalten.U.S. Patent No. 4,439,330, Ooms, March 27, 1984, discloses concentrated fabric softeners comprising ethoxylated amines.
Patent No. 4,476,031, Ooms, October 9, 1984, describes ethoxylated amines or protonated derivatives thereof in combination with ammonium, imidazolinium and like materials. The use of alkoxylated amines as a class in plasticizer compositions is known (see, for example, German Patent Applications 2,829,022 and 1,619,043 and U.S. Patents 4,076,632 and 4,157,307).
Juni 1985, Turner und Dovey.US Patent 4,422,949, Ooms, December 27, 1983, relates to plasticizer concentrates based on DTDMAC, glycerol monostearate and polycationic agents. See also GB 59502, June 26, 1985, Turner and Dovey.
The concentrates are said to be readily dispersible/emulsified in cold water to form fabric softening compositions.
Concentrated dispersions of plasticizer material can be prepared by incorporating therein certain non-ionic plasticizer additives, as described in EP-A-406 and GB 1 601 360.
As can be seen, the various solutions to the specific problem of preparing fabric softening compositions in concentrated form suitable for consumer use have not been entirely satisfactory. It is well known (for example, from U.S. Patent No. 3,681,241) that the presence of ionizable salts in softening compositions helps to reduce viscosity.
The fiber and fabric softening and antistatic compounds used in the practice of this invention have the general formula
Die bevorzugten Verbindungen können als quaternisierte Diester von Diisopropanolaminen betrachtet werden.wherein each R substituent represents a short chain (C1-C6, preferably C1-C3) alkyl or hydroxyalkyl group, e.g. (most preferably) methyl, ethyl, propyl, hydroxyethyl and the like, or mixtures thereof each R' is a long chain hydrocarbon substituent, e.g." a short chain (C1-C4) hydrocarbon substituent, especially methyl. The counterion X- is not critical herein and can be, for example, halide, methyl sulfate and the like. It will be understood that the substituents R, R' and R" can optionally be substituted with various groups, such as alkoxyl, hydroxyl, or branched, but such materials are not preferred in accordance with the invention. The preferred compounds can be considered as quaternized diesters of diisopropanolamines.
While not intending to be limited by theory, it is believed that the ester moieties impart biodegradability to these compounds, whereas the chain branching of the isopropyl moieties provides sufficient hydrolytic stability so that the compounds can be stably formulated as liquid compositions under the conditions described hereinafter. The desirable viscosity properties of the compounds, which allow them to be formulated as concentrates, are entirely unexpected. Moreover, since the compounds are cationic, these compositions not only provide softness to fibers and fabrics, but also antistatic benefits.
The present invention relates to liquid fabric softening and antistatic compositions which comprise: a liquid carrier and at least about 1% by weight of a fabric softening compound of the formula described above dissolved or preferably dispersed in said carrier. Such liquid compositions are most preferably formulated at a pH of about 1.5 to about 5.0 to ensure good storage stability. For general use for fabric softening during the rinse cycle of laundry, such compositions will typically comprise from about 3% to about 15% by weight of the softening compound.
The liquid compositions of the present invention contain the plasticizing compound as particles dispersed in the liquid carrier. The particles are sub-micron in size, generally having average diameters in the range of about 0.10-0.45 microns. Such particle dispersions may optionally be stabilized with emulsifiers.
It is important that the liquid compositions of the present invention be substantially free of free (i.e., non-protonated) amines (generally containing less than about 1%), since free amines can catalyze the decomposition of the plasticizing compounds during storage. However, if minor amounts of amines are present, they should be protonated with acid during formulation of the compositions. Strong acids such as H3PO4 and HCl can be used for this purpose.
The low viscosities exhibited by the dispersions of the softening compound particles of the present invention allow them to be formulated as water-dilutable fabric softener "high concentrates" containing from about 16% to about 25% by weight of the fabric softening compound. Such high concentrates can be conveniently packaged in pouches which can be diluted by the user with water to produce "single strength" softeners (typically having a concentration of 3-5% of active softener).
The compounds herein may also be formulated as solids, for example in combination with particulate carriers as particulate fabric softening and antistatic compositions. When formulated as solids, pH and the presence or absence of amines are of course not as critical as for the liquid compositions since stability to hydrolysis on storage is not as problematic.
Other solid compositions of the invention have the compounds releasably bound to sheet materials to provide fabric softening and antistatic compositions in sheet form which can be used in hot air clothes dryers.
The invention also includes a process for softening or providing an antistatic finish to fibers (including hair) or fabrics by bringing said fibers or fabrics into contact with a compound of the type described above.
Unless otherwise stated, all percentages, ratios and proportions herein are by weight.
The compounds used as the effective plasticizer and antistatic ingredient in the practice of this invention are prepared using standard chemical reactions. In a typical synthesis, an amine of the formula RN(CH₂CHR"OH)₂ is esterified at both hydroxyl groups with an acid chloride of the formula R'C(O)Cl, then quaternized with an alkyl halide RX to give the desired reaction product (wherein R, R' and R" are as defined in the structural formula above). For a detailed description of the synthesis of a preferred compound, reference may be made to Example I hereinbelow. However, it will be recognized by those skilled in the art of chemistry that this reaction sequence allows a wide range of compounds to be prepared. As illustrative, non-limiting examples, the following may be mentioned:
Because the above compounds are somewhat susceptible to hydrolysis, they should be handled rather carefully when used to formulate the compositions of the invention. For example, stable liquid compositions of the invention are formulated at a pH in the range of about 1.5 to about 5.0, preferably at a pH of about 3 ± 0.5. The pH can be adjusted by the addition of standard acids, e.g., HCl, HBr, and the like, with H₃PO₄ being preferred.
In addition, the liquid compositions of the present invention should be substantially free of amines (i.e., contain 1% or less, preferably 0.3%). Although many fully formulated fabric softening compositions comprise mixtures of various softening compounds, the amine softeners sometimes employed in such compositions described in the art are preferably not used in the liquid compositions of this invention because they can catalyze hydrolysis and thereby reduce storage stability. It should be understood, however, that the liquid and solid compositions of the present invention may optionally contain non-amine softening and antistatic materials, e.g., the standard softening "quats" such as ditallow dimethyl ammonium chloride ("DTDMAC"), C14 -C18 imidazolinium compounds, and others, as auxiliary softening/antistatic ingredients. Such optional ingredients may typically comprise from 1% to 10% of the present compositions.
The liquid compositions of the invention comprise a liquid carrier, which is typically water or a mixture of water and an alcohol such as ethanol or isopropanol (typically 0.5-2.0% alcohol). The plasticizer compounds used in this invention are insoluble in such water-based carriers and therefore exist therein as a dispersion of fine Particles. These particles are, as noted above, of sub-micron size and are conveniently prepared by high shear mixing, whereby the compounds are dispersed as fine particles. Preferred particles have average diameters in the range of 0.15-0.45 microns. The preparation of a preferred dispersion is described in detail in Example II hereinafter. Since the compounds are hydrolytically labile, care should be taken to avoid the presence of bases and to maintain processing temperatures in the range of about 65 to about 85°C, preferably 65 to 75°C.
The particulate dispersions of the above type may optionally be stabilized against settling by means of standard non-basic emulsifiers, particularly non-ionics such as the C14-18 ethoxylates (EO8-15), which are typically used at concentrations of 0.1-2%, in accordance with known practice in the formulation of liquid DTDMAC fabric softener dispersions.
In the process aspect of this invention, fabrics or fibers are contacted with about 3.0 g to about 9.0 g (per 3.5 kg of fibers or fabrics to be treated) of the compounds herein in an aqueous bath or in a hot air clothes dryer. Of course, the amount used is at the discretion of the consumer depending on the fiber or fabric type, the degree of softness desired, and the like. Typically, about 120 ml of a 5% dispersion (see Example II) is used in a 25 liter laundry rinse bath to soften a 3.5 kg load of mixed fabrics and provide antistatic benefits.
The following examples illustrate the practice of this invention, but are not intended to limit the invention.
Die Synthese des erfindungsgemäß verwendeten bevorzugten Gewebeweichmachers wird mittels des folgenden zweistufigen Verfahrens ausgeführt: Schritt A. Aminsynthese The synthesis of the preferred fabric softener used in the invention is carried out by the following two-step process: Step A. Amine synthesis
Die Lösung aus Palmitoylchlorid und Methylenchlorid wird zugetropft und bei 40-45ºC unter einer inerten Atmosphäre über Nacht (12-16 h) erwärmen gelassen.0.6 moles of di(hydroxy-2-propyl)methylamine are placed in a 3-liter three-necked flask equipped with a reflux condenser, an inlet for argon (or nitrogen) and two addition funnels. Into one addition funnel is placed 0.8 moles of triethylamine and into the second addition funnel is placed 1.2 moles of palmitoyl chloride in a 1:1 solution with methylene chloride. Methylene chloride (750 mL) is added to the reaction flask containing the amine and heated to 35ºC (water bath). The triethylamine is added dropwise and the temperature is raised to 40-45ºC, stirring for 1 ½ hours. The solution of palmitoyl chloride and methylene chloride is added dropwise and allowed to warm at 40-45ºC under an inert atmosphere overnight (12-16 hours).
Bestamdteil Menge (Gew.-%) Weichmacherverbindung* Isopropylalkohol Farbstoff/geringfügige Bestandteile Wasser H&sub3;PO&sub4; * Hergestellt im Beispiel I ** Erreicht wahlweise 5-15 % der WeichmacherverbindungThe preparation of a liquid fabric softening composition for use in the rinse cycle of a standard laundry laundering process is as follows. Component Quantity (wt.%) Plasticizer compound* Isopropyl alcohol Dye/minor ingredients Water H₃PO₄ * Prepared in Example I ** Optionally reaches 5-15% of the plasticizer compound
The hydrolysis-free preparation of the composition of Example II is carried out as follows. The softening compound and isopropyl alcohol are mixed and heated (to 80-85°C) to form a fluidized "melt". The melt is then poured into water (at 65-75°C) with high shear mixing (7000 rpm; 20-25 minutes) to bring the softening particles to a size of less than 1 micron. The dye and minor ingredients are added and the pH is adjusted with H₃PO₄. The resulting dispersion has a viscosity of 4x10⁻² Pa.s⁻¹ (40 centipoise) and is used in the conventional manner as a rinse-added fabric softener. All liquid compositions of the invention are prepared in substantially the same manner.
In the same way, dispersions of the plasticizer from Example I in water-isopropyl alcohol (90:10) with concentrations of 8% (5x10⊃min;² Pa.s⊃min;¹ (50 cP)) and 15% (8x10⊃min;² Pa.s⊃min;¹) (80 cP)) are prepared.
In addition to the cationic softening compound, the present compositions may be supplemented with all kinds of optional components conventionally used in fabric treatment compositions, such as dyes, perfumes, preservatives, optical brighteners, opacifiers, viscosity modifiers, fabric conditioning agents, surfactants, stabilizers such as guar gum and polyethylene glycol, anti-shrink agents, anti-wrinkle agents, fabric curling agents, spotting agents, soil release agents, germicides, fungicides, antioxidants such as butylated hydroxytoluene, anti-corrosion agents and the like.
In particular, materials such as DTDMAC, the C16-C18 dialkylimidazolinium compounds, polydimethylsiloxanes, glycerol monostearate and, as mentioned above, emulsifiers, particularly ethoxylated nonionics, may optionally be used in the present compositions. As stated, amines such as TAMET (C18H37N[CH2CH2OH]2) may be present in relatively small amounts (typically 0.3-0.5%), when in the protonated form.
Instead of liquids, solid carrier materials can be used. For example, the softener compounds can be adsorbed on particulate solids such as potassium sulfate, micronized silica, and the like and added to a laundry rinse bath. Alternatively, the softeners can be releasably spread on a sheet (e.g., a paper towel, nonwoven fabric, or the like) and spun with wet fabrics in a hot air clothes dryer such as the BOUNCE dryer-added product known in commercial practice. Generally, such compositions in solid form will contain 80-99% carrier and 1-20% softener.
The following examples illustrate the further practice of this invention.
A dryer-added supplementary sheet is prepared by heating 5 g of the softening compound of Example I in 6 g isopropanol to form a melt in the manner of Example II. The composition of Example VI is prepared in the manner of Example II as particles of size below 1 micron suspended in a liquid. In a convenient embodiment, the composition is packaged in a simple plastic bag which is opened and emptied into four times its volume of water before use to produce a "single strength" plasticizer composition, thereby saving packaging and freight costs as well as storage space.
The single strength composition prepared from the concentrate of Example VI can be applied to human or animal hair, typically after shampooing, to provide a soft, smooth feel.
It will, of course, be apparent to those skilled in the art of commercial synthesis that the diisopropanolamine starting materials used herein may include varying amounts of monoisopropanolamines and triisopropanolamines. Thus, the commercial grade ester reaction products will include, in addition to the diester softeners, varying amounts of mono- and triesters. Moreover, on a commercial scale, it may be more economical to prepare the esters herein by the use of acids and suitable catalysts rather than acid chlorides. Importantly, the preferred compounds herein work well at temperatures lower than many fabric softeners described in the art, making them more useful in hot air clothes dryers, as well as resulting in good performance when the fabrics are line dried.
