Abstract

The piston (3) of a hydraulic cylinder (1) is locked in its end of stroke position by a ball (10) which lies in a radial hole (15) in the piston wall and engages the side (12) of a groove (11) formed in the cylinder end cap (2). A spring-loaded, differential locking piston (6), fitted inside the main piston blind base, has a conical surface (19) which presses the ball radially outwards into the groove. The lock is automatically released by the admission of hydraulic fluid through the cylinder inlet (7) so that the fluid pressure acts on the locking piston and forces it upwards against a spring (14) to allow the ball to move radially inwards.
