Abstract

In the water extraction stage of a papermaking machine, where the wet pulp passes through, the base plate of the water extraction chamber is flexible to vary the curvature of the water extraction surface in a downwards direction. At least one pressure unit is at the upper side of the base plate to bear down with a variable pressure while the remainder of the plate is supported by a rigid section of the chamber. The pressure unit is pref. part of a hydraulic or pneumatic piston/cylinder assembly, or it is an inflatable tube with internal and variable hydraulic or pneumatic pressure. The base plate of the water extraction chamber is on a swing mounting on the end walls of the chamber at right angles to the line of the fourdrinier movement through.
