Description

Process for the production of vulcanization sulfur. It is well known that molten naphthalene - similar to turpentine oil - absorbs large amounts of oxygen from the air. It is also known that pressed crude naphthalene still contains considerable amounts of vulcanization-accelerating phenols. When sulfur is fused with the crude naphthalene that has been pressed out, the melting point is depressed to such an extent that such a product cannot be ground sufficiently finely. However, the difficulties can be easily eliminated as follows: Equal parts of lump sulfur and pressed crude naphthalene are melted with the admission of air, ideally with the introduction of air for the purpose of stirring the mixture, then add up to 30 percent basic carbonic acid magnesia or into the melt with stirring Instead, add hydrated lime, then make the mass solidify in the form of thin threads by pouring it in thin rays into cold water, throw off the adhering moisture and then grind, if necessary with the addition of a further moderate amount of carbonate magnesia or hydrated lime for the purpose of dusting during the Grinding to a powder as fine as possible. This powder can be sifted to different degrees of fineness in a known manner by means of atomization in the air stream, but it can also be sieved through Müller gauze, whereby the static electricity must be dissipated.

The new product allows the vulcanization time to be shortened. The vulcanizates have a better nerve and stay fresh longer, especially in the accelerated aging test in a ventilated drying cabinet.
