Bei der Verwendung von Kohle zu Absorptionszwecken besteht ein Übelstand darin, daß die Kohle sich zuweilen bei der Absorption oder bei der Behandlung zur Entfernung der absorbierten Stoffe entzündet. Es wurde gefunden, daß die Entzündungsfähigkeit der Kohle durch Zugabe nicht oder schwer flüchtiger Säuren wesentlich herabgesetzt oder ganz aufgehoben werden kann. Als besonders geeignet hat sich Phosphorsäure erwiesen. Es genügen sehr kleine Mengen, so daß eine Abnahme der Absorptionsfähigkeit nicht eintritt. Beispiel. Nach dem Verfahren des Patents 29o656 erhältliche Kohle wird mit einer o,5prozentigen Phosphorsäurelösung überschichtet und nach einigem Stehen, gegebenenfalls nachdem die Durchtränkung durch Evakuieren unterstützt wurde, durch Absaugen oder auf andere Weise von der Flüssigkeit getrennt; man kann auch noch mit Wasser nachspülen, ohne die Wirkung aufzuheben.
