Description

Process for cleaning electrolytic mercury oxide. That through. Mercury oxide obtained by electrolysis of alkalis and oxygen salen with a mercury anode would be very suitable for chemical and other purposes because of its fine flaky nature, especially z. B. for ship paints as protection against drilling mussels and similar animals, or for chemical reactions in which the fastest possible dissolution of the oxide, z. B. in dilute acids, as in; the production of aldehyde from acetylene: with oxide as a catalyst. For ship piercing, however, chemically produced oxide is used almost exclusively, because the electrolytic oxide contains a lot of mercury, up to 50 percent and more. For chemical purposes, this metal content is at least inconvenient. The metal cannot be completely removed by sludging.

We have now found that one can: ennoble the oxide, i. H. a metal-free one Oxide is retained as a color without impairing the grain fineness and thus the opacity can,% v if the metal is driven off by distillation at temperatures below 5oo °, z. B. by using low mercury over-vapor pressures.

We have also found that the purpose of making electrolyte oxide metal-free while retaining its other properties can be achieved particularly quickly and completely if air or other oxygen-containing gases or gases are passed through the distillation chamber during the heating to 300 to 450 ° that give off oxygen easily. The evaporation of mercury is accelerated by the resulting low mercury partial pressure, and the smallest metal particles, which otherwise offer great resistance to their removal, are oxidized. Not only are there no losses of oxide, which are noticeable at higher temperatures because of or the decomposition of the oxide, but an increase in oxide at the expense of the most troublesome admixtures, namely the very finest mercury particles.
