Die gleichmäßige Verteilung wird jedoch dadurch erschwert, daß diejenigen Teile der Flüssigkeit, welche die Wand des Turmes erreicht haben, zum allergrößten Teil schnell an ihr herunterlaufen und nicht mehr in das Innere der Füllung zurückkehren. Man suchte diesen Mißstand durch Unterteilung der Füllung zu beseitigen, lagerte das Füllungsmaterial auf mehreren Siebböden, die die Flüssigkeit abfingen und von neuem verteilten. Diese Unterteilung ist bei Verwendung von schwerem Füllmaterial schon wegen der Gewichtsverteilung nötig. In neuerer Zeit verwendet man für Waschtürme vielfach leichtes Füllmaterial, wie Ringe, Spiralen, Hohlkugeln u. dgl., so daß die Unterteilung des Gewichtes wegen selbst bei hohen Türmen nicht erforderlich wäre. Das schnelle widerstandslose Herunterlaufen großer Flüssigkeitsmengen an der Wandung verlangt aber nach Abhilfe, damit der Waschturm einen höheren Wirkungsgrad erhält.
