Abstract
An electrolytic membrane (310) is disposed in a single, gas-tight chamber. Each main surface of the membrane has a pervious electrode (308,312). The compartment formed by the membrane contains an electrochemically active material capable of existing in a gaseous phase and being electrochemically reversibly active so as to enter into a reduction/oxidation reaction at the electrodes and produce ions that are transportable through the membrane. A potential difference is applied across the electrodes to establish a voltage gradient across the membrane so as to ionise the electrochemically active material at one electrode and transport ions through the membrane to the compartment to produce a pressure increase in the latter. A tubular extension (304) and a piston (318) associated with the compartment convert the pressure change to mechanical motion.
