Abstract
A brick wall is prestressed by individual tie rods. The wall is built on a concrete foundation (3) in which a short length of tube attached to a plate (1) is embedded. The bricks have central vertical holes and vertical grooves in their end faces. Lengths of tube joined end to end pass through the holes or grooves in the bricks to the full height of the finished wall. A wire is then inserted in the tube and subjected to tension which exerts a required prestressing. The tube is then filled with concrete and forms part of lost shuttering.
