Abstract

Material is mfd. by folding a material, partic. polyester film (40), into a flat tubular form, pref. by folding its lateral edges towards its centre as it is advanced (60,70,72,74), heating and cooling it uniformly, pref. by passage over hot and cold rollers (90,100), while maintaining uniform tension and pressing it with rollers, applying adhesive (120) continuously along its length, and stacking it continuously on a rack (24) so that adjacent windings (48,49) become bonded together. The adhesive produces a unitary stack which is cut into straight sections to yield the honeycomb structure. Pref. the rack is rotated in a plane common to the feed direction of the strip of tubular material while maintaining uniform tension, the material being passed around a guide roller (144) mounted on a pivotal dancer arm (142) allowing the roller to move to and from the rack in controlled manner. More pref. movement of the dancer arm towards or away from the rack causes the motor feeding the tubular strip to speed up and slow down respectively. Pref. adhesive is applied to the strip in direct proportion to its feed speed. Appts. is used to fabricate expandable honeycomb insulation panels of flexible thin plastic film, partic. polyester. Appts. is designed to enable film to be permanently folded cleanly without wrinkling or warping to detract from its appearance or mode of functioning.
