Abstract

In a system wherein fluid streams pass from respective conduits into a common conduit, the change in flow rate of each of the streams is detected by monitoring the combined stream at a sampling point in the common conduit. Samples are periodically taken, each sample being compared to the previous sample to determine any change in compsn. of the combined fluid. The comparison enables the compsn. of the fluid stream, which has caused the change in compsn., to be determined. The fluid stream compsn. is then correlated with the compsns. of the known fluid streams being produced in order to identify the fluid stream responsible for the change. Used for monitoring of excess gas streams produced by a petroleum or petrochemical plant and being disposed of by flaring. Technique can also be applied to liquid and solid streams. Cost of monitoring fluid streams is reduced by avoiding individual monitoring of each stream.
