Description
In order to be able to bleach raw cotton, it is first put in alkaline liquids mostly cooked in the absence of air. This will make the fatty and waxy Substances as well as pectin substances, which prevent bleaching, opened up. This treatment is denoted by the word "belly", and after this belly the bleaching takes place with oxidizing agents, such as chlorine, or reducing agents, such as sulphurous acid. That Bulging requires large equipment and a lot of steam and is quite cumbersome.
It has been found that the tummy, ie the treatment with alkaline liquids, can advantageously be replaced by treatment with the enzymes of the pancreas. It softens the raw cotton few hours in a o, 1 percent aqueous solution of pancreatin at 20 to 40 0 C and then bleaches with the known bleach. The bleaching occurs remarkably easily in comparison with the usually bellied cotton, which is all the more surprising since the cotton treated with pancreatin differs only little externally from raw cotton. Depending on the pancreatin concentration, the treatment lasts from one to several hours. The advantages are obvious: there is no need for equipment or steam, time is saved and the cotton is less affected. You can let the enzymes work in alkaline, neutral and weakly acidic solutions, you can also add salts in various concentrations to support the effect and you will generally make appropriate use of the known experience about the factors promoting and inhibiting the enzyme effect. Instead of the enzymes of the pancreas, one can also use similarly acting enzymes from other sources, e.g. B. papayotin, castor ferments and others.
Fresh organs or parts of plants can also be used in place of the permanent preparations use. You can also use the well-known water- and acid-insoluble precipitation products, such as the tannic acid precipitate obtained with the pancreatic ferment, use which, when exposed to weak alkalis, is an effective enzyme solution supplies.
