Description
The invention relates to the recovery of zinc from zinc cables, house pipes and the like. namely in the form of metallic zinc. As a result of those brought about by the war Shortages of copper have for some time forced the copper into electrical ones Replace cables and wires with zinc wire, which is similar to the Copper wires in copper cables with insulation material made of tarred cotton, jute or the like. is changed. The zinc cables and wires will wear out over time worn. For the recovery of the zinc it was obvious to use an analogous way to that Reconditioning the copper in copper cables to choose, namely the worn cables too glow to completely burn and destroy the tarred insulation fabric. • However, this path is impracticable with zinc cables, because it has the disadvantage that here the zinc burns to zinc oxide, which is partially volatilized and condensed must and partly remains in the charred residue as a mass that is difficult to process. The zinc oxide then has to be worked up by ironworkers, which is considerable Cost is linked.
The present invention aims at the recovery of zinc from unusable zinc cables and wires in metallic form. For this purpose, the invention proposes a different approach, the insulating covering only partially destroyed until it has become liquid or crumbly and crumbly without the zinc changing chemically or oxidizing. This is done in such a way that the zinc cable is heated to a temperature below the melting point of the zinc in an atmosphere that is indifferent to the oxidation of the zinc. Because the zinc melts at 417 ° C, the heating may be increased up to a maximum of 400 0 C. It is advisable to use heating between 380 and 400 ° C, the temperature being controlled by suitable heat meters. The heating melts the tar and flows off, while the cotton, jute or similar fabric cover is destroyed and crumbly, so that it becomes crumbly can be mechanically separated from the zinc core by tapping. The heated zinc wire, which is protected against oxidation (nitrogen or V material is used as an indifferent gas), does not suffer any change as a result of the heating. After separating the crushed accompanying mass, the zinc wire is obtained in metallic form, from which refined zinc can be obtained again by simple remelting.
