Patentiert im Deutschen Reiche vom 19. April 1917 ab.Patented in the German Empire on April 19, 1917.
It is known that cellulose is dissolved by moderately dilute sulfuric acid (between 70 and 90 percent) and converted into glucose by diluting and boiling this solution for a long time (cf. Chem.-Ztg. 1910, p. 461; Zeitschr. F. Physiolog. Chemie 1882/83, Vol. 7, p. 913). This process, originating from Flechsig, which consists of two phases, "dissolving" and " saccharification", has not found its way into technology, since it is technically uneconomical despite the almost quantitative conversion of cellulose into sugar. because the amount of sulfuric acid required for one phase, the "dissolving", is too great in relation to the cellulose and therefore an enormous amount for the "saccharification". Makes dilution necessary. The clearest proof of the inefficiency of the process can be seen in the fact that even now, at a time when usable wood saccharification processes have become the most urgent need, the process has not been used, and one with less efficient saccharification processes that only have a small one To deliver sugar yield, seeks to remedy.
Gegenstand der Erfindung ist eine Abänderung des Flechsigschen Verfahrens, welche dieses technisch leicht ausführbar und wirtschaftlich macht. Nach dem genannten Verfahren ist zum »Lösen« der Zellulose wenigstens die sechs- bis achtfache Menge 72prozentiger Schwefelsäure erforderlich. Demgegenüber wurde durch Versuche festgestellt, daß ein »Lösen* des Zellulosematerials in der Schwefelsäure überhaupt nicht erforderlich ist, um eine fast vollkommene Hydrolyse zu erzielen, daß es vielmehr genügt, das Material mit so wenig Schwefelsäure zu behandeln, daß es eben durchfeuchtet wird Und nach kurzer Einwirkung eine Art Paste, etwa von butterartiger Konsistenz, bildet. Je nach der Reinheit des Zellulosematerials genügt hierfür in der Regel schon χ/2 bis i.Teil Schwefelsäure auf ι Teil des Zellulosematerials. So geringfügig diese Abänderung des Verfahrens im ersten Augenblick vielleicht erscheinen mag, so ist es doch einerseits den früheren Angaben gegenüber überraschend, daß schon so geringe Schwefelsäuremengen ohne An wendung von höherem Druck zur vollständigen Hydrolyse der Zellulose genügen, und andererseits ist hierdurch dieser Verzuckerungsprozeß mit einem Schlage zu einem technisch brauchbaren Verfahren geworden und 'ein Erfolg von weitgehender wirtschaftlicher Bedeutung erzielt, zumal auf diese Weise nicht nur ziemlich reine Zellulose, wie Zellstoff usw., sondern auch Holz und ähnliches, nur zum Teil aus Zellulose bestehendes Fasermaterial, in Zucker übergeführt werden kann;The subject of the invention is a modification of Flechsig's method, which makes it technically easy to carry out and economical. According to the process mentioned, at least six to eight times the amount of 72 percent sulfuric acid is required to "dissolve" the cellulose. On the other hand, it has been established through experiments that "dissolving" the cellulose material in the sulfuric acid is not necessary at all in order to achieve almost complete hydrolysis, that it is rather sufficient to treat the material with so little sulfuric acid that it is soaked in moisture short exposure forms a kind of paste, for example of a buttery consistency. Depending on the purity of the cellulosic material is sufficient for this purpose usually already χ / 2 to i.Teil sulfuric acid ι part of the cellulosic material. As minor as this modification of the process may appear at first glance, it is surprising, on the one hand, that even such small amounts of sulfuric acid are sufficient to completely hydrolyze the cellulose without the use of higher pressure, and on the other hand, this saccharification process is with one Schlage has become a technically viable process and a success of far-reaching economic importance is achieved, especially since in this way not only fairly pure cellulose, such as cellulose, etc., but also wood and similar fiber material, only partially consisting of cellulose, are converted into sugar can;
The method can be carried out, for example, as follows: 1 kg of sawdust is used with ι 1 about 75 percent sulfuric acid, expediently with cooling, made into a paste until one uniform paste has emerged.

Die Masse bleibt dann mindestens einige Stunden sich selbst überlassen; darauf setzt man 141 WasserThere is no application of a higher (e.g. hydraulic) pressure, urid it, there is no other pressure at all the mixture to act as the little of the mixer or kneading machine when making dough exercised which is insufficient to cause saccharification. The mass then remains for at least a few hours left to yourself; on that one puts 141 water
■and stir well. If one now examines the aqueous solution, it shows a higher polarization capacity, but only a very low reduction capacity Signs that the breakdown of cellulose has only progressed to dextrins, but not to sugar is. In order to convert these dextrins into sugar, the mixture or, after filtration of undissolved material, the watery one Solution boiled until repeated analytical testing shows no further increase in sugar content the solution gives more. Then the sulfuric acid is neutralized with lime and the solution of the excreted gypsum and the insoluble parts of the wood, which mainly containing the lignin, filtered off. The sugar solution can then either directly fermented or evaporated to obtain the sugar. Should the lignin components are obtained in pure form for the purpose of recovery, they can be used in front of the Separate the lime precipitation from the solution by filtration. ■
If one does not want to obtain sugar, but rather the dextrin-like intermediate products, then will the cellulose-sulfuric acid paste mixed with cold water after standing for several hours, filtered off from the insoluble, the sulfuric acid precipitated again with lime and the filtrate from the plaster of paris either up to a certain concentration or at will evaporated to dryness.
