Description
KAISERLICHES Λ IMPERIAL Λ
PATENTAMT.PATENT OFFICE.
The subject of the invention forms an \ ^ experience for the production of a replacement for Leather made from protein bodies or bodies similar to white proteins, such as bacterial skins, yeast, Protein, albumin, mixtures of these substances and the like.
It. it is already known that protein bodies can and are tanned. even already tanned protein bodies have been proposed as leather replacements.
.If protein bodies are tanned with vegetable tanning agents, then hides are obtained, which are soft, sometimes sticky, difficult to scar and resistant to mechanical influences are not sufficiently resistant. .
Are protein bodies with mineral salts, e.g. B. chromium salts, tanned, then result hard and brittle, poorly grainable products.
It has also been proposed to combine protein bodies (mineral and vegetable) to tan using the methods known in leather manufacture.
If one proceeds accordingly, i.e., as is customary with animal hides, one uses chromium or aluminum salt solutions which, gradually increasing, reached a concentration of 5 to 15 percent and above, depending on the type of salts used (cf.
Hegel, »Chromgerbung«, Seite 51; Springers Verlag, Wiener »Weißgerberei«, 2. Verfährt, man umgekehrt, gerbt man erst mit vegetabilischem; Gerbstoff und dann mit mineralischem Gerbstoff in Kon-, zentrationen,'' wie sie bei der ^Herstellung von Leder üblich sind, so ändert sich nichts an demeben beschriebenen Ergebnis.;Hegel, "Chromgerbung", page 5 1 ; Springers Verlag, Wiener "Weißgerberei", 2nd edition, page 167, Hartleben's publishing house) and in which the hides remain for many hours, this treatment changes the egg whitening bodies to such an extent that, after completion, a completely hard and brittle material is created that is called Leather substitute is not to be used. The vegetable tanning that follows the ■ combined method does not change this either. If you do the other way around, you first tan with vegetable matter; Tanning agent and then with mineral tanning agent in concentrations, `` as are customary in the ^ production of leather, nothing changes in the result just described.
- ·'.-. ■.■·.·■ Even then, no product can be obtained that. has leather-like properties, if another suggestion is based on chrome glue layers, which are then vegetable tanned, since the incorporated chromium salts are not only superficial harden, but cause -. that: through the whole shift the tanning he follows. However, this requires brittleness and hardness, properties which, as already mentioned, cannot be eliminated by vegetable tanning. - · '.-. ■. ■ ·. · ■
Die bekannte kombinierte' Gerbmethode liefert also stets unbrauchbare.Produkte.. Erfindung vermieden. ... . ■ ' .The well-known combined 'tanning method always delivers unusable products .. It, has now surprisingly shown that it is an excellent substitute for leather leads if the mineral tanning solutions only harden on the surface .., This success could never be achieved so far, as it is always known for leather combined method should be used and never let it be avoided that not a dead tanning and thus rendering the whole mass unbrewable occurs .. ■ This one The disadvantage of the method according to the .7 °. Invention avoided. ... ■ '.
• Es wird dabei durch vorsichtige .minera- '• It is done by careful .minera- '
B. Chrom--, Eisen-, Aluminium-,The resilience of the surface tan the top layer against mechanical wear and tear achieved while through Organic tanning of the whole mass preserves the insolubility of the product the bending and breaking strength is brought about. Accordingly, only the top one will be Protein body layer with mineral tanning agents, e.g. B. Chromium, iron, aluminum,
ίο Cer- usw. It must therefore be avoided that the mineral tannins, the protein bodies are completely tanned, otherwise brittle skins arise and it is important to avoid the action of mineral tannins only to be carried out until the superficial 'protein body layers have just hardened are, while those under these layers are lightly tanned or untanned ^ n Protein bodies are then tanned with vegetable tanning agents.
J e 11 m a r, »Moderne Gerbmethoden«, Seite 171, Hartlebens Verlag)The type of tanning just described leads to particularly good results under special conditions. First of all, the mineral tanning baths must not exceed a certain concentration. The limit extends upwards, e.g. B. with chromium salts at a, content of about 2 percent (based on oxide). It is also important that the highly diluted mineral tanning baths are well cooled. It has been found that the mineral, highly diluted tanning solutions as possible to about 15 0th and must keep below, while, as is well known, at. Tanning should be respected by animal, hides preferably temperatures of 25 to 30 ° '(see. J e mar 11, "Modern tanning methods," page 171, hard life Verlag)
■' ■The duration of action of the mineral tanning solution in the process according to the invention must be short. When tanning with an approx. 0.1 percent chromium oxide solution, an exposure time of V 2 hours is sufficient. If, on the other hand, a 0.5 percent chromium oxide solution is used, the skin becomes too hard if the exposure time is V 2 hours. The duration of action must therefore be shorter in this case. One should now expect that if a very concentrated mineral tanning liquor is used, the surface of the protein bodies will be hardened in an even shorter time. It turns out that z. B. with a 2 percent chromium oxide solution and an exposure time of only 5 minutes, the protein body layers are already too hard and too brittle. The length of time for the first tanning also depends on the type of chromium salts used and can be determined by a few tests for each salt. The duration of the second vegetable tanning and the concentration of the corresponding tanning baths can be chosen as desired. It is advisable to take strong vegetable tanning baths because this saves time. ■ '■
In leather tannery, aluminum salts, iron salts and salts are also used less frequently Earth. These are less suitable than chromium salts for the present process; apart from the fact that the concentration limit is different when using iron salts than when using chromium salts (you can use slightly stronger concentrations than with chromium), the iron salts have the disadvantage that they are used in the following vegetable Tanning results in tannic acid, i.e. only black products.
When carrying out the process, the procedure is as follows: tissue with protein body solution and coats the excess ^ part by any of the known methods removed. After solidifying, the tissue layer is then briefly immersed in the cooled, brought hardening mineral tanning solution, after which tanned with vegetable extract will. The leather substitute is finished according to one of the known methods Procedure.
An alternative procedure so that "first vegetable-tanned and then, as already described, hardened with mineral salt solution · surface of the vegetable-tanned protein bodies. The products thus obtained are still usable, but less than those of the previously described methods manufactured skins.
The protein bodies that can be subjected to the new process come into consideration Bacterial skins, yeast protein, albumin, glue, mixtures of these substances and the like.
The best way to do this is to put the layers of protein bodies hardened with the mineral tanning agent in a formalin bath of low concentration. with strong formalin solution, so lose ! the material has the soft leather handle and takes on a rubber-like character. If a concentrated formalin solution is used, the products become hard. Usable baths contain approximately 0.3 percent formalin. The skin remains in the formalin bath, the temperature of which corresponds to room temperature, for a shorter or longer time depending on its thickness, possibly up to several (twelve) hours. This is followed by the same as before it was introduced into the formalin bath
Compared to the process in which vegetable tanning extract is used, hajt. the use of formalin has the advantage of being lighter Products because the, vegetable Extract always causes a weak brown color, this also excludes the application
1.0 dung einer Reihe von Farben (z. B. Eisenfarben, die gerbsaures Eisen bilden) aus.1.0 formation of a range of colors (e.g. iron colors, which form tannic iron).
The formalin treatment can also precede the tanning in the mineral tanning bath. The formalin can also be added to the vegetable tanning bath or the type of production of the leather substitute described in detail above can be used treatment by tanning in a mineral and vegetable bath connect with formalin.
A simplification of this process is achieved by adding vegetable tanning agents or formalin, emollients, etc., or mixtures of these substances to the protein body solutions from the outset, then applying the protein bodies to the known substrates and hardening them in the mineral tanning bath after they have solidified, as already stated . An excess of tanning ■.
. ·Substances in the protein bodies must be avoided because too much tannin causes the Protein bodies tanned to death, d. H. become brittle. With simple experiments, each Determine the limits for the amounts of vegetable tanning agents to be added, formalin etc. However, this method requires the addition of emollients also for the mineral tanning bath, otherwise the emollient added to the skin to be tanned Means are leached out of this by the mineral tanning bath. . ·
Another embodiment of the method consists in applying the tanning solutions to apply the solidified protein body layers on the substrates by applying the Spray on solutions, dust them on or use a sponge, brush, etc. either by hand or spread by machines and let the tanning solutions soak into the layers.
In dieser Weise wird sowohl die HärtungIn this way both the hardening
:with mineral tanning extract as well as the tanning with vegetable tanning agents or formalin. It can also be done in such a way that the latter Tannins are incorporated into the protein bodies and only the mineral tanning agents be applied superficially. When using formalin the treatment can the skin can also be done in formaldehyde vapor. Apart from the fact that in this way of working a saving in emollients results is thereby by eliminating the baths, a significant simplification of the entire process is achieved, in addition, it is possible to carry out all measures at room temperature, because too the hardening process with the mineral tanning, Fabric no longer requires keeping a low temperature: the skins swell much less with this treatment than with the procedure described above, at which baths are used. There-. through is made possible between applications of the mineral and vegetable tanning agents or the formalin Scars of the superficially hardened protein body layers to undertake. :
.The leather substitutes can also be produced in such a way that the 'on the known documents skin applied with the mineral tanning agents · is hardened, ■ whereupon from the base side the tanning with the vegetable matter, formalin or a mixture of both takes place. In the manufacture of substitutes for patent leather if, for example, the procedure is such that the hardened skin is painted, then on this The grain takes place on the side and finally the vegetable tannins or formalin be sprayed on the back. .
As emollient agents are glycerine, soap, molasses, hygroscopic salts, Oils etc. into consideration that the. Protein bodies possibly with the addition of leather flour: factice, Castor oil, wood oil, paint, etc. are mixed in from the start. The emollients can also be added to the baths, in case such are used, added "or after completion of the entire tanning process with the protein bodies are brought together.
