Description
It is known that magnesium oxide, for example finely ground one, is calcined Magnesite, in a watery alluvium after treatment with a limited Amount of carbonic acid under pressure can be converted into a basic magnesium carbonate, which can be converted with or without the addition of Fibers are suitable as' insulating material. This product shows something else the hydraulic ones Properties of magnesite in that the molded pieces produced from it by pressing still harden. It has now been found that by the procedure described below heat protection mass can be produced, which no longer has this property and does not provide such solid fittings, but which are much more light and light associated high thermal insulation properties.
The procedure is as follows: For an aqueous alluvial layer of magnesium oxide, e.g. B. finely ground calcined magnesite or magnesium hydroxide, to which any amount of fiber is added, a solution of ammonium carbonate or ammonium bicarbonate, which at least ι MoI-. Contains carbonic acid to 1 mole. MgO. The mixture is heated with stirring to about 50 0 C. The initially thin mixture thickened by the suspended MgO, J apparently ohrie to go into solution, formally its volume swells to many times and goes into hydrous magnesium carbonate. The ammoniacal liquid is removed and dried. During the drying process, carbonic acid is split off and the normal water-containing magnesium carbonate changes into basic magnesium carbonate. You can also first produce normal magnesium carbonate without adding fiber, then remove the ammoniacal liquid, mix it up with water again and heat it to the boil. Here carbonic acid escapes. The fiber can then be added before or after cooking.
After drying, an insulating compound is obtained, which is extraordinary It is characterized by lightness and a high level of thermal protection.
