In einem Digitalrechner wird ein künstliches Bild der verschiedenen Instrumente erzeugt, das auf einem anstelle des Kombiinstrumentes im Armaturenbrett integrierten Bildschirm angezeigt wird. Dieser Bildschirm mitsamt dem Rechner, der die Darstellung auf ihm erzeugt, gehört damit ebenso wie das konventionelle Kombiinstrument zum konzeptionellen Bestandteil des Gesamtsystems „Automobil". Instrumente im herkömmlichen Sinn reduzieren sich auf Sensorik und Meßdatenerfassung und -bearbeitung. Die Anzeige selbst wird per definierter Schnittstellen dem Displaysystem überlassen.
