The invention relates to a sock with a shaft part and a foot part, wherein the foot part has a heel area, a sole area, a ball area and a toe area and at least a region of the foot part is reinforced by at least one additional yarn.

It is known that depending on the activity of the wearer, socks are designed differently. EP 015 119 Bl discloses a sports sock for long-distance running and sprinting. The sports sock is knitted from a base yarn throughout. It has a reinforcement in the ball area and in the heel area. The reinforcements are formed by a second terry cloth yarn, which is knitted with the base yarn and a first terry cloth yarn. This creates two sets of terry cloth loops in the heel area and in the ball area of the sports sock known from EP 0 015 119 Bl. The two sets of terry cloth loops form a reinforcement in the ball area and in the heel area.

The sock according to the invention with a shaft part and a foot part is characterized in that the additional yarn or yarns are knitted in a right-left knit or right-right knit. This design creates reinforcement zones that do not lead to the formation of bald spots even when the sock is subjected to heavy wear, since, in contrast to the prior art, there are no plush loops that can be severed by friction. This results in a sock that retains an attractive appearance even after frequent use.

Preferably, the additional yarn is knitted into the ball area. This provides increased padding in the ball area. This additional padding is particularly beneficial for socks that are intended to be used for sporting activities, especially for endurance running.
