Abstract

The evacuated insulator consists of two plates (1) joined at their edges and the space (4) between them is evacuated. Numerous webs (3) may join the plates in addition to the edge joins in order to prevent the external air pressure deforming the plates. The webs have the shape of tubes or are otherwise rotationally symmetrical. The plates have reflecting surfaces inside and/or outside. The plates may be made of glass and the resulting construction may be employed as a window. The webs may be a lattice work, which is either continuous or interrupted. The plates may be convex towards the outside in order to better withstand the external pressure.
