Jedenfalls wurde bei Benutzung von Zinkoxyd bisher das Gemisch stets erwärmt. Demgegen-■ über hat sich nun überraschenderweise herausgestellt, daß die Entbitterung der Cascara-Sagrada mit Hilfe von Zinkoxyd auch ohne Erwärmung des Gemisches bewirkt werden kann, wenn man das mit Zinkoxyd und einer gerade zur Durchfeuchtung hinreichenden Menge Wasser vermischte Rindenpulver bei gewöhnlicher ■ Temperatur durch geeignetes Durcharbeiten, z. B. Durchharken, möglichst wirksam der Einwirkung der Luft aussetzt. Schon nach 4 bis 5 Stunden hat das Gemisch dann nur noch einen schwachen bitteren Geschmack, und nach etwa weiteren 4 Stunden ist die Entbitterung vollständig vor sich gegangen. Preßt man nunmehr das Gemisch aus, so erhält man nach dem Einengen im Vakuum ein wesentlich helleres Extrakt, als es bei der Arbeitsweise in den erwähnten Patentschriften erhalten werden kann. Die Ursache hierfür ist offensichtlich darin zu ' suchen, daß beim Erwärmen des Gemisches ein Überhitzen einzelner Teile desselben nicht zu vermeiden ist und die sehr leicht zersetzbaren Glycoside dieser Droge, wie so viele andere Glycoside, unter teilweiser Zersetzung gebräunt werden. Es scheint, daß das nach vorliegendem Verfahren gewonnene Produkt auch wirksamer infolge jeder fehlenden Zersetzung ist. Jedenfalls bietet aber das neue Verfahren gegenüber den bisher bekannt gewordenen Verfahren durch das Fortfallen des Erwärmens der Masse wesentliche Vorteile, indem nicht unwesentliche Kosten für Feuerung und andere Unbequemlichkeiten, nämlich vor allem die Einhaltung einer eine bestimmte Grenze nicht überschreitenden Temperatur erspart werden.
