Beim Füttern der in Scherbäumen eingeschirrten Pferde in den Pausen während der Fahrt auf der Straße werden bisher Futtergefäße verwendet, die durchaus ungeeignet sind und die den Pferden nicht so sehr zur Befriedigung des Nahrungsbedürfnisses als zur Qual dienen. Entweder werden die Futtergefäße am Kopf der Pferde befestigt — Holz- oder Blecheimer oder Säcke — oder sie werden an den Scherbäumen angehängt. In beiden Fällen sind sie am ungeeigneten Ort; denn im ersteren Falle steckt das Pferd mit dem Maul entweder zu tief im Futter, oft bis an die Augen, so daß es nicht atmen und oft auch nicht sehen kann, oder es kann das Futter bei gewöhnlicher Kopfhaltung nicht erreichen, wenn es nicht den Futterkübel oder -sack auf eine geeignete Unterlage aufsetzt und so verständiger handelt als der es fütternde Mensch. Im zweiten Falle sind namentlich bei Scherbäumen, die stets schräg nach aufwärts gerichtet sind, daran angehängte Futtergefäße zu hoch, d. h. zu dicht unter dem Kopf und auch, da die Scherbäume nicht lang genug sind, zu dicht vor der Pferdebrust angebracht, das Pferd muß daher unnatürlich den Kopf zurückdrängen, um in den Futtertrog hineingelangen zu können. Dabei ist es bei allen den genannten Füttereinrichtungen ausgeschlossen, daß dem Pferde neben dem Trockenfutter auch gleichzeitig Wasser gegeben wird, oder daß ihm Wasser in dem in dem Scherbaum hängenden Futtergefäß gereicht wird.
