Es ist bekannt, daß sich schwefelsaures Ammoniak durch Umsetzen von kohlensaurem Ammoniak mit leichtlöslichen Sulfaten, z. B. Alaun, wie auch mit schwerlöslichen Sulfaten, z.B. Gips (Graham-Otto, S.Auflage, 3.Abteilung, Seite 482), darstellen läßt. Beide Reaktionen wurden zur Gewinnung von schwefelsaurem Ammoniak aus Teerwasser vorgeschlagen, wobei im ersteren Falle das Teerwasser mit der stöchiömetrischen Menge Alaun versetzt und im zweiten Falle das Teerwasser wiederholt durch eine Lage Gips geleitet werden soll. Beide Vorschläge haben technische Bedeutung nicht zu erlangen vermocht, und in der Technik wird das schwefelsaure Ammoniak nach wie vor dargestellt durch Zusammenbringen von Ammoniakdämpfen mit Schwefelsäure.
