Abstract

The split crankcase is used for facilitating the accommodation of the channels for distribution of the lubricating oil. These channels are readily flushed for cleaning purposes and the crankshaft is readily fitted. The crankcase is split by a vertical plane which passes through the axis of the crankshaft bearings. This arrangement is used especially for a V-shaped engine arrangement. In the diagram the crankcase is split along the vertical plane R. The crankcase is bolted together by main connection bolts which pass through the crankcase above and below the crank bearing position. Additional peripheral bolts are used for clamping the crankcase together at the top and bottom. Longitudinal channels are machined into the crankcase at the top and bottom and these form closed channels when the crankcase is bolted together. The lubricant channel in the upper part has cast bosses for accommodating nozzles for spraying the pistons with oil.
