The invention relates to a weighting agent based on iron oxide for weighting drilling fluids.
In deep drilling, flushing fluids have the task of removing the rock loosened by the drilling tools to be carried out. Such rinsing liquids are used to increase the specific weight with low Provided quantities of weighting agents, which, however, must themselves have a high density. Known weighting agents are for example barite, quartz, iron oxides, lead oxides, zinc dust (US-PS 20 99 825), fine pyrite, galena (NL-PS 50 353). Such weighting agents sediment easily in the drilling fluid in an undesirable manner. One from U.S. Patent No. 22 60 499 known proposal tries to avoid sedimentation of the Bescliwerungsmittel that Weighting agents such as barite, iron oxides or lead oxides in an aqueous phase with highly colloidal clay treated, the dispersion is dried and the dried material is pulverized again. The won, with Approx. 2% highly colloidal clay coated particles of weighting agent can be more easily mixed with water do not wet and sediment as quickly as uncoated weighting agents.
Weitere bekannte Vorschläge sehen den Einsatz von üblicherweise als Mineralfarbe verwendetem Eisenoxid vor (DE-PS 4 48112) wie auch von Eisenoxiden in Mischung mit Stabilisierungsmitteln wie Graphit (US-PS 25 51874) oder Magnesiumaluminat (US-PS 26 86 593).Further known proposals see the use of iron oxide, which is commonly used as a mineral paint before (DE-PS 4 48112) as well as iron oxides mixed with stabilizing agents such as graphite (US-PS 25 51 874) or magnesium aluminate (US-PS 26 86 593).
From US-PS 22 98 984 weighting agents aul Dasis of iron oxide are known, which have been obtained by roasting pyrite. Such a technical iron oxide with a high total sulfur content has a proportion of more than about 80% Fe 2 Oj, has a density of up to 5 and should preferably be used for drilling fluids with a grain size below 75 microns. Special grain compositions are not specified, and no statement is made about the nature of the individual grain.

Metal-oxide weighting agents of the previously known ones Processes for water-based muds have practically no entry into technical drilling practice found, since their great hardness and sharp-edged grain shape lead to undesirable wear on drilling tools and led drilling jigs that sedimented funds too quickly and also not in the required amounts Quantities and specifications were available.
The invention is based on the object of providing a weighting agent for drilling fluids, sedimentation of the weighting agent is practically avoided in these drilling fluids and the weighting agent does not adversely affect the properties of the drilling fluid, which are important in terms of flushing technology impaired

The drilling fluids weighted with iron oxide according to the invention lead to a reduced grinding effect on drilling tools and devices and reduced sedimentation of the weighting agent. In drilling fluids from oil-based, water-based or emulsion fluids known per se, the iron (III) oxide according to the invention with over 80% Fe 2 O 1 of rounded grain shape, a density of about 4.5 to 5.0, a grain size below 75 microns, and a grain content of less than 10 microns of a maximum of 50% by weight, the sedimentation speed is a maximum of half the value of known weighting agents.
Derartige wasserbasiscl-e Spülungen enthalten beispielsweise Tone und hochtemperatrrbehandelte Verbindungen des Polyacrylnitril, ferner Schwermetallsalze der Huminsäure, Carboxymethylzellulose (DE-PS 14 83 798).The liquid phase of the drilling fluid loaded with the weighting agent according to the invention can be a fluid known per se z ' base oil, water or oil / water emulsion. Such water-based rinses contain, for example, clays and compounds of polyacrylonitrile treated at high temperatures, as well as heavy metal salts of humic acid and carboxymethyl cellulose (DE-PS 14 83 798).
Further suitable water-based detergents are those that use magnesia instead of swellable clay and are available according to DE-PS 10 20 585. Known rinses based on oils or non-aqueous Liquids can be found in US-PS 22 17 926 and 20 99 825.
Der wasserlösliche Anteil liegt mit 0,1% unter dem der üblichen Beschwerungs-The weighting agent according to the invention is a technical iron (III) oxide with an Fe 2 O) content of at least 80 and up to 98%. mittel, wie üblichem Schwerspat. For the weighting agent made of Fe 1 O 3 according to the invention, a rounded grain shape is also characteristic, while with such a small outer surface a porosity of the grain particles is at the same time of essential importance. This inner surface, measured by the BET method (J. Amer. Chem. Soc. 60 [1938J p. 309-319), is generally 2 to 3 mVg. The porous nature of the grain results in good wettability by capillary action, both by water and by non-aqueous media, and the weighting agent has excellent dispersibility. The latter also characterizes the sedimentation behavior. Compared to conventional heavy spar, the iron (III) oxide used according to the invention sediments half as quickly, and compared to conventional hematite or magnetite the sedimentation rate is less than a third of that of the last-mentioned substances. The weighting agent is also present in a certain grain fineness below 75 microns. The grain fraction below 10 microns is no more than 30% by weight. The grain composition of the weighting agent shows the following proportions:

With this grain composition, the bulk weight is of the Bescl'verungsmiltels 1.4 to 1.7 g / ml and the tamped volume determined according to DIN 53 194 35 to 55 ml / 100 g, which corresponds to a compacted weight of 1.8 to 2.9 g / ml.
The weighting means for drilling fluids according to the invention is made by roasting doped pyrite produced in the fluidized bed, as described in the process according to DE-PS 21 39 952.

When using these drilling fluids with a weight loss agent according to the invention it was found that the weighting agent quickly dissolves in the rinsing liquid can be incorporated, and that the desired specific weight is set after just one cycle barite requires at least two circulations.
Weiterhin unterliegt das Beschwerungsmittel auch keiner nennenswerten Zerkleinerung durch den Bohrvorgang, so daß auch über einen längeren Bohrzeitraum ein konstantes Spülungssystem vorliegt Überraschenderweise ist aberIt was also found that during the circulation of the drilling fluid, the weighting ice did not settle occurs, and it should be noted in particular that even when the drilling fluid circuit comes to a standstill up to 10 days there is practically no significant sedimentation of the weighting agent. In 1 liter of a commercially available oil flush based on asphalt and diesel oil, 3060 g of iron oxide According to Example 1, a clay and salt water rinse was prepared and then one with 1355 g (1100 g / l) natural iron oxide weighting agent of the trade to a spec. Weighted 1.90. The tests were carried out according to Example 1. It was found that the time until a constant, specific gravity was around five times that required in Examples 1 to 4. In addition, the Suspension has a significantly higher abrasiveness than the rinses of Examples 1 to 4. The viscosity values are also increased compared to those of Examples 1 to 4. An increase in the viscosity of the flushing liquid has Disadvantages of deep drilling.
In summary it can be stated that uie Weighting of mud types common in drilling practice with porous iron oxide of rounded grain shape and certain grain composition application-related Brings advantages, especially with regard to the ability to incorporate the weighting agent into the rinse (Dispersibility), the abrasiveness of the weighted rinse and the application-related data. These The advantages are particularly evident in comparison to drilling fluids containing natural iron oxide Fabrics or commercially available barite 1. are welded.
