In Krankenhäusern ist es häufig üblich, daß die Lagerungsplatte des Operstionstisches abgenommen und auf einem Fahrgestell in einen sogenannten Vorbereitungsraum gefahren wird, damit der in seinem Bett oder auf einer fahrbaren Krankenliege antransportierte Patient dort umgebettet werden kann. In diesem Vorbereitungsraum erfolgt meist auch schon die Narkosevorbereitung. Anschließend wird die Lagerungsplatte des Operationstisches mitsamt dem Patienten auf dem Fahrgestell in den Operationssaal gefahren und dort wieder auf das Untergestell des Operationstisches aufgesetzt.
