Der Apparat bewirkt das Anhalten scheu gewordener Pferde dadurch, dafs man den Pferden, wenn sie aus irgend einer Ursache scheu oder unbändig werden, das Licht entzieht.The apparatus brings shy horses to a halt by giving the horses if for any reason they become shy or unrestrained, withdraw the light.

Für gewöhnlich befindet sich diese Scheukappe in zusammengefaltetem Zustande im Rahmen A verwahrt und wird darin durch die beiden seitlich angebrachten Sperrmechanismen festgehalten. Diese letzteren bestehen aus den Sperrhebeln C, welche auf kleinen Spindeln D befestigt sind, die seitlich in dem Rahmen in je zwei kleinen Laschen gelagert sind. Am oberen Ende dieser Spindeln sind die Zughebel E befestigt, welche in Oesen enden, in denen die Riemen oder Schnüre G befestigt sind, die hinter den Oesen f mit einander verbunden werden und in der Hand des Kutschers enden. Ueber die Spindeln D sind Spiralfedern b gesteckt, welche den Zweck haben, die Sperrhebel C stets so weit unter den Rahmen zu drücken, dafs sich die unterste Versteifungsrippe F der Scheukappe daran auflegt und so die ganze Kappe in gefaltetem Zustande im Rahmen A festhält. Die Sperrhebel C haben kleine Anschlagstifte c, welche sich an die Wand des Rahmens anlegen und beim Aufheben der gefallenen Scheukappe den Hebel nur so weit vordrängen, dafs die unterste Versteifungsrippe F sich an den Nasen d der Hebel C vorbeischiebt, wobei diese zurückgedrängt werden und hinterher wieder einschnappen. Auf den oberen Lagerlaschen der Spindeln D sind Stifte e angebracht, welche den Hub der Hebel E begrenzen.
