Description
B. Salzmahlung, marronfarben. The invention relates to a method of manufacture of perylenetetracarboxylic acid N.N'-bismethylimide in the form of a red pigment. Perylenetetracarboxylic acid N, N'-bismethylimide is already known. According to German patent specification 3 86 057, the compound is obtained by heating perylenetetracarboxylic acid made with monomethylamine hydrochloride. The red-violet crystals are called vat dyes used. According to other manufacturing methods described in German Auslegeschrift 12 72 270, namely by methylation of perylenetetracarboximide or melting of N-methylnaphthalenecarboximide with potassium hydroxide, compounds in the form of marron-colored crystals are obtained. They stay there even after being crushed the particles by falling over from sulfuric acid or by grinding, e.g. B. Salt grinding, marron colored.
The products obtained by the first-mentioned process are too weak in color and too cloudy. Even no usable pigments are obtained by reprecipitating from sulfuric acid or by changing the vat.
Surprisingly, it has now been found that a strongly colored and weatherproof red pigment is obtained, if you use Perylene-S ^^ lO-tetracarboxylic anhydride and methylamine or a methylamine-releasing compound to form N, N'-dimethylperylene-3,4, 9,10-tetracarboxylic acid diimide and the resulting Subjected the product to mechanical comminution, in particular salt grinding. This is over as surprising as the pigment obtained in this way neither through the X-ray or IR spectrum nor electron microscope or by specific surface area of the marron pigments of the same Constitution differs.
The condensation reaction can be carried out in particular 120 to 14O 0 C, in an autoclave by adding a 10 to 2O ° / o excess of an aqueous methylamine solution to give the anhydride and heating to a temperature above 120 ° C. The mixture can also be heated under normal pressure with a larger excess of aqueous methylamine, evaporated and then heated to 140 to 150.degree. Instead of methylamine, methylamine-releasing compounds can also be used, such as N-methylurea, Ν, Ν'-dimethylurea, N-methylformamide or a mixture of such compounds. According to the invention, the crude pigment is subjected to a grinding or kneading operation, e.g. B. salt grinding, sand grinding, kneading or wet grinding, the salt grinding and kneading result in the strongest and purest pigments in terms of hue. In salt-5 or sand grinding, the raw pigment is ground together with inorganic or organic salts that can be removed by solvents or solid substances without salt character. This grinding can be carried out in the presence or absence of organic solvents such as acetone or such amounts of organic solvents which do not negate the effect of the solid grinding aid. The kneading takes place z. B. in the Banbury mixer or in a two-roll mill, also in the presence of salts and solvents such as glycol or aniline, or in the presence of salts and resins such as cellulose acetobutyrate and organic solvents such as di-butyl phthalate. Finally, comminution can also be carried out by wet grinding the crude pigment in a sand or ball mill, in water and / or organic solvents, such as ketones, alcohols, ethers, esters, amides and, if appropriate, in the presence of dispersants.
When the particles are measured in the electron microscope, after the particles have been dispersed in the ethyl alcohol / water mixture by means of ultrasound, it is found that the particle size of the pigments produced according to the invention is smaller than 0.1 .
To improve the dispersibility, especially in polyvinyl chloride, dispersants can be added to the pigment vvie higher alcohols, e.g. B. dodecyl alcohol, sperm oil alcohol, stearyl alcohol and oleyl alcohol, or alkyl-substituted phenols and naphthols, r. B. dodecylphenol or octylnaphthol, amines, e.g. B. olayamine, carboxylic acids and their derivatives such as stearic acid, lauric acid, abietic acid, triethanolaminostearate, oleic acid ethanolamide and ethoxylation products thereof, such as the adduct of 4 moles of ethylene oxide with heptylnaphthol or of 5 moles of ethylene oxide with sperm oil alcohol, and also petroleum sulfonates. Water-soluble dispersants that can be used include alkylsulphonates, alkylarylsulphonates, adducts of ethylene oxide with alcohols, phenols, amines, carboxylic acids and other compounds, and also reaction products of naphthalene-2-sulphonic acid with formaldehyde and its alkali metal salts and protective colloids and many polyvinylpyrroles. The pigment prepared according to the invention can be used for dyeing spinning masses and plastics, e.g. B. from polyamides, polyesters, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl chloride and cellulose esters, also preferably used by paints and printing inks.
The materials pigmented with it are very good light, weather, heat, varnish and solvent fast colored. Compared to the also red pigments of the trade, which are made from bis-p-methoxyphenylimide, Bis-p-ethoxyphenylimide consist of perylenetetracarboxylic acid, has that produced according to the invention Pigment has the advantage that it can be prepared from aqueous solution without an organic one Solvent must be added. It is more lightfast, more weatherproof and more colorful than before most lightfast and weatherproof red of the perylenimide series, namely bis-p-methoxyphenylimide, and only a little murky than this.
