Basis des Schutzes gegen Fälschung der derart erzeugten Fahrkarten ist der Schutz des als Basis für die Fahrkarten dienenden Papiermaterials. Fälscher erlangen das Basispapier, das am meisten für Fälschungszwecke verwendet wird, derart, dass sie den ursprünglichen Inhalt von einer schon entwerteten oder einen niedrigen Wert aufweisenden unbenutzten Fahrkarte auf chemischem Weg abnehmen und dann den falschen Inhalt mittels einem abweichenden Verfahren (Laserdruck) auf die Oberfläche des Basispapiers auftragen. Die mit einer solchen Methode hergestellten Fälschungen sind qualitativ sehr gut und können meistens nur mittels einer gezielten Prüfung, mit Verwendung von Instrumenten erkundet werden. Die für die Dienstanbieter verursachten wirtschaftlichen Schäden können erheblich sein, so dass die Fahrkarten-Basispapierhersteller verschiedene Schutzmaßnahmen entwickelt haben. Bei früheren Sicherheitslösungen wird ein chemischer Schutz in der wärmeempfindlichen Schicht oder in der Grundschicht, z. B. im Basispapier ausgebildet. Es gibt solche flaumige Fasern, die mit UV-Licht beleuchtet verschiedenfarbig fluoreszieren, oder sogenannte "Planchets", die meistens solche Papierscheibchen mit einem Durchmesser von 2 bis 3 mm sind, die irgendein Reagens zwecks des chemischen Schutzes enthalten. Der Farbengehalt der zwecks chemischen Schutzes verwendeten Stoffe kann mittels längerer und ergiebiger Einweichung aus dem Papiermaterial rückstandslos entfernt werden.
