Die Nerven werden dazu mit einer Elektrode elektrisch stimuliert und die Stimulationsantwort am Zielorgan (Muskel) mit Elektroden abgeleitet. Letztere Elektroden sollten für die jeweilige Beurteilung ein zuverlässiges artefaktfreies Signal liefern. Die bisher verwendeten Nadelelektroden zeigen oft erhebliche Schwankungen im Signalverhalten am Zielort, da sie während des operativen Eingriffs mechanisch bewegt werden.In surgical procedures, it is difficult to distinguish nerve fibers from small blood vessels or connective tissue. Als Isolation der gesamten Elektrode kann ein Schlauch aus Silikon, Polyurethan oder jeder andere biokompatible Werkstoff verwendet werden.
