Stand der Technik sind Photovoltaik-Elemente; die in großen Einheiten auf Dächern
angebracht werden. Nachteil dieser Systeme ist die optische Auffälligkeit sowie die
Anfälligkeit gegen mechanische Beschädigungen. Weiterhin ist bei der Erstellung einer
Photovoltaik-Anlage ein konstruktiver Eingriff in die Dachkonstruktion notwendig. Bei
Ausfall weniger Elemente sind diese Photovoltaik-Anlagen oft nicht reparabel, da sie in einem
Stück vergossen bzw. verklebt sind. Ein weiterer Nachteil sind hohe Investitionskosten, die
manchen Interessenten abschrecken und so eine gewünschte weite Verbreitung der
Solarstromgewinnung behindern. Die Montage, Wartung und Erweiterung solcher Anlagen
kann nur von Spezialfirmen ausgeführt werden, was weitere Kosten verursacht.
