Der Aquariumkörper ist oberseitig geschlossen und unterseitig offen und kann die Form eines Würfels, eines Prismas, eines Zylinders, einer Pyramide oder eines Pyramidenstumpfes oder eine andere Form aufweisen. Seine Wandungen bestehen aus glasklar durch­ sichtigem Material wie beispielsweise Glas, Plexiglas oder ähnlichem. Die obere Deckfläche und seitliche Flächen des Aquariumkörpers können auch aus einem mehr oder weniger lichtdurchlässigen schattenspendenden Mate­ rial bestehen. Über ein Ventil 6 in der Nähe der Deckfläche wird Luft aus dem Hohlkörper abgesaugt, wobei der Wasserspiegel im Aquarium bis zur gewünschten Höhe ansteigt. Die Höhe H stellt die maximal sichtbare seitliche Höhe zwischen den Wasserspiegeln des Teiches und des Aquariums dar und ist so bemessen, dass durch den atmosphärischen Druck maximal der gesamte Rauminhalt des Aquariumkörpers mit Wasser gefüllt bleibt und die Druckdifferenz für die Wassertiere unschädlich ist.
