Hand bilge pumps for pumping out water from boats and ships are known. However, they cannot be used under all operating conditions that occur because they need a suction sump as a lifting pump, into which they are placed with the lower suction end of the cylinder or immersed, while the raised water is directed outboard via a hose. The bilge offers this swamp as long as the boat or ship lies on a level keel. This is not the case with a sailing boat in motion, because the water from the bilge runs to leeward, sloshes back and forth and does not offer a permanent place as a suction sump. In addition, in such a case, the known pumps could only be operated in leeward position, which, however, can be disadvantageous and dangerous for the stability of a small boat. The Lenz pump syringe described below eliminates these disadvantages in a simple and new way because it does not need a suction sump. It is designed as a single-acting syringe which, with its lower suction and spray tube, can be held in any puddle of water, no matter how small, that it sucks up when the piston is drawn up. If the cylinder is full of suction, it is held overboard and sprayed out. By dimensioning the length of the cylinder and the suction-spray-pipe accordingly, it can be operated from a place on the windward side in order to suck in the water in the lee of the boat. This property makes it possible with this sprayer to continuously spray splashing water overboard while driving, without having to give up the seat on the windward side of the boat, which was previously not possible. The special design of the piston enables the use of plastic for the cylinder as well. This is important so that the total weight is kept low because of the hands-free handling. Since drawn plastic pipes have large internal tolerances, the sealing means of the piston must be designed to be elastic with respect to the cylinder wall. Rings made of rubber or plastic of various profiles are used as sealing means, e.g. also O-rings. They are mounted in pairs in a ring groove on the piston so that they form an elastic labyrinth for each ring pair. The double-wide ring groove of the piston for 2 elastic rings has a prismatic base so that the lowest point of the prism is in the middle of the groove. In this way, a ring on the conical base of the ring groove is pressed against the cylinder wall in each direction of movement of the piston.
In this way, the seal against the cylinder wall is also guaranteed if the piston is given a very large tolerance in the cylinder in order to avoid seizing in the cylinder when the conveyed material is contaminated. In Fig. 1, a bilge syringe is shown in longitudinal section. Fig. 2 shows a piston with O-rings in section. In the cylinder 1, the piston 2 is moved back and forth by the piston rod 3 and the handle 4. When moving upwards, i.e. when pulling out the piston rod 3, the piston 2 sucks liquid into the cylinder 1 via the suction pipe 5 . During this injection cycle, the syringe is held overboard. On its largest diameter, the piston carries the piston ring groove 6 in which the two rubber or plastic sealing means, in the example shown O-rings, are located, which are designated with 7 and 8. The base of the annular groove 6, as shown at 9 and 10, is prismatic. As a result, the overlying O-rings 7 and 8 are alternately pressed outward against the cylinder wall by the conical design of the base of the annular groove 6 when the piston 2 moves back and forth.
