Abstract

The propeller is ground so that the quarter-arc from the apex line of the leading edge is taken away as far as the low pressure side. This prevents water being forced by the rotary motion of the propeller to the low pressure side. This is more important in the case of thick aluminum blades than in the case of thin steel ones. The propeller is just as stable, because it is less loaded at this point.

Description

Increase the efficiency of propeller driven Boat drives (mainly with outboard or sterndrive) Changes to the propeller.

All usual propeller blades are rounded at the edges cutting through the water (leading edges), namely on the negative pressure and positive pressure side the same (semicircle Fig. 1A ) or they are even left blunt. As a result, the water displaced by the leading edges is also partially directed into the negative pressure area and counteracts the inflowing water. The vacuum is reduced by this amount of water and an unnecessary frictional resistance is accepted at the edge of the sheet. On the overprinting sides of the leading edges, the quarter curve from the apex line is not ideal hydrodynamically, because here water is to be transported onto the leaves.

The propeller blades are ground at the leading edge in such a way that no more water can be displaced into the negative pressure area by rotary movement. This is done by removing the quarter bend from the apex line of the leading edge to the negative pressure side. Any aerodynamic figures are not to be considered with this cut, because on the negative pressure side of the wing no water is displaced, but a negative pressure is built up. The quarter arches of the leading edges remaining on the overprint pages are ground elliptically ( Fig. 1 B). With thick aluminum wings this is more important than with thin stainless steel wings. The stability of the propeller is not affected by these measures because it is the least stressed at this point. This intervention increases the efficiency of the propeller (less slip) because the vacuum increases and the water resistance on the leading edges is reduced. The lateral rear offset of the boat due to the rotation of the propeller (apparently running to the side depending on the direction of rotation of the propeller) also decreases.
