So liefern z. In the reduction of nitro to azo and hydrazo compounds always takes place alongside a more or less considerable formation of amines takes place, especially if one carries out the reduction electrolytically. So deliver z. B. nitrotoluene and Nitroanisole up to 30 percent and more of the corresponding amino bodies and even more their content rises higher in the case of o-nitrobenzoic acid and others.
The experiment shows, however, that the formation of these bodies can be avoided if in the reduction, instead of nitro compounds, one uses the corresponding azoxy compounds goes out. Because from the latter no amino compounds can arise, if the reduction process is interrupted after the hydrazo stage has been reached. It So it's about finding a way to keep the azoxy compounds free of amines to manufacture.
It is already known that azoxybenzene, inter alia. by the action of hydrazo on Nitrobenzene can arise according to the equation:
+ 3C6H0-NH-NH-C6H,+ 3C 6 H 0 -NH-NH-C 6 H,
+ 3 C6 H, - N: Ν'- C6H, + 3 H, O. + 3 C 6 H, - N: Ν'- C 6 H, + 3 H, O.
S. 281 unten und S. 282).This implementation takes place after. Haber (Ztschr. For physical chemistry, Vol. 32 I. [1900], P. 271 and ff.) In the case of electrolytic reduction of the nitrobenzene in alcoholic-alkaline solution instead as soon as next to the nitrobenzene Hydrazobenzene occurs. He could also prove it by purely chemical means , achieving a 92 percent theoretical yield of azoxybenzene (1. c. P. 281 below and p. 282).
A practical significance for the technical preparation of the azoxybenzene comes this reaction does not occur, since one occurs in the ordinary chemical or electrolytic Production of the same much better yields, in addition in a simpler way, is obtained.
The situation is different with the derivatives of nitrobenzene. This is where the alkaline reduction nowhere so smoothly as with nitrobenzene itself, but as already stated above, they occur next to the azoxy bodies. and their other reduction products, the azo and hydrazo bodies, usually very substantial amounts of amino bodies. So here would be a Processes which make it possible to avoid the formation of the latter may be of great value.
So far nothing was known about whether the derivatives of nitrobenzene even had the same reaction between nitro and hydrazo bodies takes place as with nitrobenzene themselves, and even less what yields of the corresponding azoxy bodies on the one hand and what by-products are obtained on the other hand. If you wanted from their behavior in the known reduction processes draw a conclusion in this regard, it could only be that this too Reaction with them must be much more imperfect than with nitrobenzene.
Um so auffallender erscheint es, daß gerade diese Reaktion bei allen untersuchten Verbindungen in sehr vollkommener WeiseIt seems all the more striking that this reaction was examined in all of them Connections in a very perfect way

It therefore offers a means to generalize Azoxy compounds can be prepared from nitrobenzene derivatives free of amines, which in turn can easily be prepared by known methods can be converted further into azo and hydrazo compounds.
This process is carried out in such a way that the to be reduced Nitrokö'rper in neutral or alkaline solution or suspension under vigorous stirring and heating of the action of the corresponding hydrazo body exposes until the desired degree of Conversion is achieved.
Dabei entsteht ein Gemenge von Azoxy- und Azotoluol, das frei von Toluidin ist und bei der Reduktion zu Hydrazotoluol auch frei davon bleibt.100 g of o-nitrotoluene is mixed with about 240 g and 1000 cc hydrazotoluene ioprozentiger Sodium hydroxide - 8 hours stirred at a temperature of 90 0 in a closed vessel equipped with reflux condenser - optionally with the addition of 800 cc of toluene. This creates a mixture of azoxy and azotoluene that is free of toluidine and remains free of it when reduced to hydrazotoluene.
The reaction in question between nitro and hydrazo bodies does not only take place if both are the same, but also if they have a different radical. So sets z. B. o-nitrobenzoic acid with hydrazobenzene to ο - azoxybenzoic acid and azobenzene, a-nitronaphthalene with hydrazobenzene to form α-azoxynaphthalene and azobenzene, etc. The conditions under which this conversion takes place are the same as above.
Man kann sie aber auch gemeinsam weiter reduzieren und erst ihre Reduktionsprodukte voneinander trennen.100 g of o-nitrobenzoic acid with about 180 g of hydrazobenzene - optionally under Addition of 600 g of toluene and 1000 ecm of 10% sodium hydroxide solution for 16 hours stirred in a vessel of the same type as above. The resulting conversion products: O-azoxybenzoic acid soda and azobenzene can easily be separated and processed further, since the former is in the Water, the latter is dissolved in toluene. But you can also continue it together reduce and first separate their reduction products from each other.
Verfährt man z. Azotoluol. The reaction between nitro and hydrazo bodies can optionally also be carried out execute in such a way that they are carried out simultaneously with the further reduction of the resulting Azoxy body is going on in the same apparatus, although the effect obtained is not as perfect as that of the separation both processes. If you proceed z. B. in the electrolytic production of hydrazotoluene so that the bath from the outset contains copious amounts of the latter substance as well as azoxytoluene, while the nitrotoluene only comes in gradually and in small portions, it does so every time the freshly entered nitro body before it is exposed to a considerable extent to the action of the Can be subject to current, reduced by the hydrazotoluene to the azoxy body; the current effect on the other hand, it mainly extends to azoxy- or azotoluene.
In an analogous manner, one can also use the chemical production of hydrazotoluene the process for the pure preparation of the azoxy body with that for its further reduction unite.
The method described above has proven itself in experiments with a large number of Nitro bodies of both the benzene and the naphthalene series, and not just for the simple nitro or polynitro bodies, but also with their chlorine, sulfo, oxy and other derivatives in the same way and seems to be a very general one Application to be able.
