The invention relates to projectiles which are composed of a steel core, a casing that leaves the core tip free and is closed at the bottom, and a soft metal filling inserted between the core and casing. According to the invention, such projectiles have been perfected in such a way that they have a high penetrating power and are consequently suitable for use as so-called armored projectiles. On the drawing shows
Fig. Ι as an embodiment of the invention an infantry rifle projectile on an enlarged scale, partly in axial longitudinal section, partly in view.
Fig. 2 und 3 zeigen in ähnlicher Darstellung zwei weitere Ausführungsbeispiele.Figs. 2 and 3 show a similar representation two further embodiments.
The projectile shown in FIG. I will first be described.
The core of the bullet is made of hard steel. from the point A and the shaft A 1 . The tip A can have any suitable shape. The shaft A 1 is retracted in its part located after the point A , and the base of the point protrudes laterally over the shaft in the manner shown in the drawing. The shell B, which is closed by the base b 1 and consists of copper, nickel or the like, rests against the base of the tip A with its open annular edge b 2 in such a way that its surrounding area forms a continuation of the surface of the tip. The cloak has £ 1 in its downward direction; The parts lying towards it have a diameter corresponding to the ν caliber and gradually narrows towards the edge b ' 2. The space between the jacket B and the shaft A 1 of the core is filled with a coherent, coherent mass C made of soft metal of 'high specific weight (e.g. lead), which due to the shape of the jacket narrowing towards the mouth and the fact that the shaft of the core is retracted in its part located immediately behind the tip, prevents the core from moving away from the shell base b 1.
In zweiter Linie ist der Widerstand, den im Verein mit dem Mantel B die zusammenhängende Masse der Füllung C dem Zerspringen entgegensetzt, sehr groß, so daß dieIf an infantry rifle bullet of the type described hits an armored shield, as is commonly used for field guns, the filling C compresses violently, bursts the jacket B and, like this, detaches from the core A. The latter now continues on its own. The projectile thus has the property of the known armored core projectiles that when penetrating the armor, the kinetic energy of the entire projectile acts on the core, which has a smaller diameter than this. Before the known projectiles of this type, however, the object of the invention has the advantage of a previously unattainable penetration power, for the following reasons. First, the jacket B and the filling C rest against a projection of the projectile core and consequently transfer their full kinetic energy to the core on impact. In the second place, the resistance that the cohesive mass of the filling C opposes the shattering in conjunction with the jacket B is very great, so that the
The time during which the jacket and filling act on the core penetrating the armor shield is as long as possible.
The bullets shown in Fig. 2 and 3 differ from the above-described bullet according to Fig. 1 in that the shaft A 1 of the core is provided with undercuts d 1 (Fig. 2) or grooves a 3 (Fig. 3), into which the soft metal filling C is pressed. This creates a particularly strong connection between the core and the soft metal filling.
