Description
The invention relates to an electrochemical Flow cell for electrical current / voltage measurement Liquids.
Thick film sensors in the classic sense are planar Detectors such as z. B. for thermal, piezoelectric, potentiometric and amperometric measurements used become. To put these sensors in automatic flow systems integrate as used for electrochemical measurements they have to be made in flow cells that have to be specially manufactured to be built in. Such flow cells are for example from A. Günter, U. Bilitewski: Analytica Chemica Acta 300 (1995), page 120, in which in one Plexiglas block provided a recess (flow volume) which is connected to an inlet and outlet channel. In the flow cell shown there is the cell volume in Cross section rectangular. At the hypotenuse of the depicted Cross-sectional rectangle is one on a substrate attached thick film electrode attached. Such Construction has a large dead volume and requires one elaborate manufacturing technology. This is a One-off production on a laboratory scale and therefore is a such, quasi handcrafted flow cell expensive and unsuitable for mass production.
Massenverwendung ungeeignet. There is also a flow cell from Hewlett Packard known, also from a variety of individual Components is assembled. In one housing there are two highly planar parts, in which electrodes are integrated, by separated a thin non-conductive film. There is a in the slide Flow path for the transport of the liquid sample through the Cell recessed so that the internal volume of the flow cell by the thickness of the film and the area of the recess in this slide is determined. The total height of this cell is approx. 9 cm. It is true that such a cell is known a significantly lower dead volume than the cell above, however, the manufacturing is due to the necessary Precision of the components and the housing as well as the highly planar parts very complex, so that by the required quality in the manufacture of the individual parts such cells usually in the cost range of some a thousand marks. Therefore, such cells are because of the Manufacturing on the one hand and the price on the other hand for one Mass production or mass use unsuitable.
From US 4,496,454 is an electrochemical flow cell according to the preamble of claim 1 known. The flow cell includes two with a spacer electrodes spaced apart from one another and one arranged between them Flow path connected to an inlet or an outlet. The spacer is formed between the electrodes by an insulator layer, the Internal volume of the flow path through a flat recess in the insulator layer is determined.
In addition, it is already known that microtechnology is used in manufacturing electrochemical sensors, such as. B. flow cells is widely used. So For example, DE 41 17 912 C2 discloses a flow measuring cell with two Electrodes and a spacer disposed therebetween, the Spacers through a silicon semiconductor body structured by means of etching technology is formed with flat recesses for the flow path. Furthermore, in the EP 0 496 521 A1 describes an electrochemical gas sensor which has a glass plate has flat recesses as a spacer between two electrodes.
The invention has for its object a simple and inexpensive to produce Flow cell with a small dead volume in the range of a few µ-liters and a To create processes for producing such.
This object is achieved by the features of the device claim 1 and Process claim 8 solved. Preferred embodiments of the invention are Subject of the subclaims.
The present invention relates to an electrochemical flow cell with two through a spacer electrodes spaced apart and one intermediate flow path, the one with an inlet and an outlet is connected, wherein the spacer between the electrodes by a in Insulator layer created thick-film technology is formed and an areal recess of the insulator layer Internal volume of the flow path determined.
The electrodes of the invention are preferably used electrochemical flow cell through planar Thick film electrodes formed, the invention Cell has an upper and a lower substrate, which as The basis for the corresponding electrodes is used. Between Electrodes and the corresponding substrates can Conductor tracks and solder lugs can be arranged, which are also in Thick film technology, d. H. Screen printing can be carried out. The electrochemical flow cell according to the invention can furthermore have heating and / or temperature elements which can also be produced using thick-film technology. Instead of individual electrodes, several electrodes can also be used or an electrode array can be used, the printed conductive surface, for example with a Laser trimmers can be structured around a Obtain electrode array.
Preferably an electrochemical Multi-channel flow cell according to the present invention by layering or stacking at least two electrochemical flow cells are produced.
The present invention further relates to a method for the production of an electrochemical flow cell, wherein at least one electrode or one on each substrate Electrode array is applied in thick film technology, and by connecting the two with electrodes (Electrode arrays) provided planar thick-film substrates using a thick film technique Insulator layer, one connected to inlet and outlet Has recess area, the flow cell is formed. The internal volume of the flow cell is determined by the Recess area and the layer thickness of the insulator layer determined over the electrode surface. This volume definition happens advantageously already during the printing process of the electrodes. Furthermore, using thick film technology Heating and / or temperature elements are applied. For the Electrode area can all be used for thick film technology suitable conductive pastes (e.g. platinum, Ag / AgPd, gold or graphite pastes) are used, the thick layers such as electrodes, insulator layer, etc. preferably by means of Screen printing can be made.
Zusammenfassend weist die Erfindung gegenüber bekannten
Durchflußzellen die folgenden Vorteile auf:
In summary, the invention has the following advantages over known flow cells:
A flow cell according to the invention can be easily and cost-effective based on thick-film technology produce.
The use of a special housing that the Picks up electrodes and serves as the actual flow cell, such as in the known HP flow cell not necessary, because by connecting two electrodes provided planar thick film substrates a flow chamber is formed.
The liquid cannot, as in the case of conventional flow cell, between insulation layers (Foil) and electrode. So the active, liquid-wetted electrode surface through the Insulator layer is defined constant.
Because the insulator layer has a solid structure and adheres firmly to the electrode layer, Assembly in contrast to the film of the conventional Flow cell are not damaged.

Eine bevorzugte Ausführungsform der Erfindung wird nachfolgend anhand der Figur erklärt, wobeiA preferred embodiment of the invention will explained below with reference to the figure, wherein
Fig. 1 shows a schematic exploded view of a flow cell according to the invention.
The flow cell comprises an upper substrate 1 , on the lower surface of which conductor tracks and solder tags 2 are applied. Subsequently, an upper flat electrode 3 , for example made of platinum, gold or graphite or another conductive material, is applied by means of thick-film technology. The upper electrode 3 is spaced from a lower electrode 5 , which is also produced in thick-film technology, by a printed insulating layer 4 , the flat recess 4 a of which forms the flow path. The lower electrode 5 is printed on a lower substrate 7 , conductor tracks and soldering lugs 6 likewise being located between the lower electrode 5 and the lower substrate 7 . Furthermore, the upper 3 and lower electrode 5 and the upper 1 and the lower substrate 7 have corresponding recesses or holes 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , which form the inflow / outflow for the flow path 4 a. Not shown, but with the same thick-film technology, temperature sensors and / or heating elements can be applied. The dimensions of the flow cell according to the invention depend essentially on the requirements of the specific use. In a preferred embodiment, the cell is approximately 10 mm wide, 25 mm deep and 3 mm thick.
Furthermore, it can be seen without illustration that, for example, stacking or layering several flow cells according to FIG. 1 enables a multi-channel flow cell in a small space.
The combination of multilayer layers consequently permits the construction and the cost-effective production of larger numbers of flow cells with a few microliters of internal volume, the internal volume of the flow cell, as can be seen from FIG. 1, due to the size of the recess 4 a in the insulator layer 4 or can be determined by the thickness of the insulator layer 4 , so that the flow volume can be determined by the choice of parameters during the printing process.
