Patentiert im Deutschen Reiche vom 23. Juni 1905 ab.Patented in the German Empire on June 23, 1905.
The subject of the invention is a method, gelatin with halosilver thereby to make iridescent that the gelatin mixed with a haloid salt and dried in Condition is bathed in silver nitrate solution. The invention consists in that the gelatin mixed with the haloid salt first with a bath of alcohol or ether, optionally with the addition of acetic acid Ammonium and then after drying with an alcoholic silver nitrate bath, if necessary with the addition of ether, is treated. This gives a stronger iris effect than after drying so far, in which the tones vary a little, depending on whether you only have alcohol or only ether or uses a mixture of both or a mixture of each substance with ammonium acetate.
The process is extremely simple and delivers at a very low cost leaves iridescent all over their surface. These sheets are more iridescent for all uses Gelatine can be used, especially for tinsel leaves.

If you want to make translucent leaves, you don't give the gelatine any other Additions, but if you want to make leaves that are less or not translucent, add zinc white to the mass or another suitable substance. The leaves can also be colored by any suitable means.
The gelatin mass is poured onto glass plates and, after drying, it is immersed the leaves in a bath made of high alcohol or ether, or made of a mixture of these two substances or of alcohol or ether to which one added a small amount of ammonium acid. The volatiles are left evaporate. Then the leaves, whose appearance by this first immersion in has not been altered in any way, immersed in a bath consisting of a solution of consists of about 2 grams of silver nitrate in about one liter of 80 percent alcohol; the alcohol ether can be added.
If the mass is allowed to dry after this second immersion, the iris effect appears all over the surface.
The method described is applicable not only to gelatin sheets, but to all objects in which there is gelatin on a surface, e.g. B. with paper with gelatin coating.
