Waschkammer an.
End box of an electrolysis cell After flowing through the mercury electrolysis cell, the alkali metal-containing mercury is discharged from the cell and fed to the amalgam decomposer. In order to be able to obtain a pure alkali hydroxide solution in the amalgam decomposer, it is necessary to separate the amalgam leaving the cell as completely as possible from the salt solution. For this purpose, the amalgam flows through a box at the end of the electrolysis cell, in which the brine is held back by a retaining wall immersed in a mercury trough. In order to prevent salt solution contained in the amalgam in dispersed form from getting into the amalgam decomposer, the immersion seal is followed by a washing chamber filled with circulating water. Improved brine separation can also be achieved by extending the dwell time of the amalgam in the end box. However, reducing the flow rate of the amalgam by increasing the size of the immersion seal has the disadvantage that a larger amount of mercury is required for this purpose.
In known constructions, the dividing or retaining walls of the end box are
fixed in vertical flange connections, one of which passes through the trough of the
Immersion lock leads. Such end boxes are complicated and expensive to manufacture.

The present invention is based on the object of finding a simpler and more advantageous construction of an end box which, with a low mercury requirement, enables the salt solution to be separated from the amalgam effectively. According to a further idea of the invention, weir strips are never arranged on a screw-off base plate, which closes the end-'vasten downwards via a horizontal flange connection. The battlements have only a small amount of fleas, so that only a small amount of mercury is retained in the end box. The unscrewable box bottom makes the end box easily accessible for rubber lining the inner walls or for cleaning purposes, so that the two vertical flange connections that were customary up to now can be dispensed with.

durch das Rohr 21.An exemplary embodiment of the end box according to the invention of a mercury electrolytic cell is shown in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3 in longitudinal section, front view and top view. The amalgam flows into the end box at 1, in which it flows through a calming section 2 with a gently sloping and then horizontal floor, so that saline solution enclosed in the amalgam can separate. The saline solution is retained in the brine chamber 4 by the partition 3 and can flow off via the opening 5, which at the same time serves as a chlorine gas vent, when there is excess pressure in the cell space. The pipe section 6 adjoining the opening 5 is shown in FIG. At the top, the brine chamber 4 is covered by the cover 7, so that after this cover is opened, any impurities that have accumulated on the Oueeksilber in front of the partition 3 can be removed . From the brine chamber 4 the amalgam flows through the weir trough 8 into the water chamber 9, in which brine residues still contained in the amalgam are absorbed by the water. The water enters the water chamber 9 through the nozzle 10 and leaves it via the pipe 11. After the amalgam in the water chamber 9 has flowed over the weir bar 12 , it flows through the weir trough 13 into which the retaining wall 14 is immersed and over the weir strip 15 to the drain pipe 16. The pipe 16 is followed by the amalgam Zersetaer . The weir strips 12 and 15 are arranged on the bottom 17 of the end box, which is fastened to the box by the screws 18. The end box is covered with a rubber coating 19 on the inside. Instead of an end box, the amalgam current at the end of the electrolysis cell can also be divided into two smaller end boxes. The saline solution leaves the electrolytic cell through tube 21.
